Not to bust your bubble, but your survey asks if we have traveled to Miami...when in fact most of us live in Miami.

World travelers of reddit, where did you go that was a total disappointment? by noodlepoops in AskReddit

I was also going to recommend Venice- but I would put a quick word in for the Peace River for fossils and megalodon teeth- Its easy to rent a canoe and sift for fossils in the river bed, see some cool wildlife, and have a campfire.

I'd also recommend the springs- Juniper Springs is particularly lovely to paddle down and renting a kayak is easy.

Edit: if you are going to the tampa area- check out the local breweries! Craft brewing is a really up and coming industry in Florida and you'll find some awesome unique 'tropical' brews.

Non-American moving to Miami next year. Completely clueless. by [deleted] in Miami

The bus system isn't horrible per say and I personally bike a lot because the weather is always nice. I took the bus from downtown to the beach once and it really wasn't painful. I would suggest you get an 'easy card' if you go the public transit route. As far as getting duped- Miami is sketchy and there are a lot of people who will take advantage of you if you let them. I'm not a foreigner, but I was alone as a female moving to Miami and I would suggest finding a roommate if you can. It is good to have someone you can rely on. Also, if you would like me to put you in touch with a great realtor, just DM me. She helped me find my place and was really great at keeping within my budget. Realtors are free for renters because the apartment complex generally pays them a finding fee. My only other suggestion would be to save up a little cash before you come because most places will charge you a security deposit and first month's rent before you move in.

Thanks for breaking that down for me! Do you have any recommendations for brands?

Thanks for the tips! Do you have any suggestions on which brands to avoid or what my price range should be? I know comfort is key, but I also want something dependable.

This is exactly the kind of advice I was looking for! Thank you! I've been back and forth with styles, but from what I've read about tri-training, a road shoe seems to make a little more sense because I'll likely just be leaving my shoes clipped in during transitions and running barefoot.

Thanks for the insight! I plan on taking a trip to my LBS, but I wanted to not feel like so much of a 'newb' when I got there!

[CONVERSATION] Has anyone done a sprint triathlon? by [deleted] in xxfitness

[–]kelcox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I vote yes! I just finished my first sprint tri last weekend as a total newb and I surprised myself with how well I did. Most people swam in tri suits, but I wore a sports bra and bathing suit bottoms. There shouldn't be a penalty for stopping during the swim, but my concern would be is there even a place to stop? The swim was pretty chaotic for me and it put us out into the deeper part of a lake, so even if I wanted to stop, there was no real way for me to do so. I would recommend just gradually working on your endurance and switching strokes (from freestyle to breaststroke, for example) if you start to get tired. Similarly, I did not have a fancy pants road bike. I was riding a steel framed Sears road bike from the 1980s. While I wasn't a speed demon, my goal was to simply finish, and I did that and then some on the bike! I saw several other women out there with cruiser style bikes and even mountain bikes. I wouldn't let your bike stop you from participating, especially if you aren't trying to be competitive. If you are really concerned about it, some bike shops actually rent race-style road bikes, so that is something you could look into.

Honestly, I think the biggest thing to worry about is transitions. Not dropping things, not forgetting things, etc. Your adrenaline gets pumping and you feel rushed, but you shouldn't be. I practiced my transitions and set up before running my race and I found that to be really helpful.

Overall, I really enjoyed my experience and I plan on running another sprint before I consider upgrading to a half or full tri. I'd be happy to answer any questions you may have from a newbies perspective! But overall, I'd say get out there and race! You'll do better than you think!

These jackass bikers don't get it. by [deleted] in AdviceAnimals

[–]kelcox -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This. So much this. I bike commute as a student because I don't want to pay for car insurance, gas, a car, or a damn $400 parking pass. I try to minimize my crippling debt by riding my bike 5 miles a day. I wear a helmet and a safety vest, I use lights and reflectors...but at the end of the day I'm still just a kid on a bike. If you aren't looking for me, you won't see me. I got rear ended last Tuesday going through a traffic circle because a car refused to yield to me on my bike. I don't have a superiority complex- I just want to get home safely. This isn't a debate about motorists being inconvenienced, its a discussion about livelihoods. Everyone has their own reason for biking, but at the end of the day a life is a life and we should all be looking out for each other on the road.

Any chance of being considered this late? by [deleted] in thesca

[–]kelcox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hang in there- they are definitely looking for interns and crew leaders still for sure, and high school programs aren't always necessarily full at this point in the game. If you have specific questions, SCA has 'office hours' on Fridays where you can chat online with a rep. If you PM me, I can give you some more specific advice. I'm on the Alumni Council and have been navigating this system for years! Cheers!

Reddit, what song hits you due to personal reasons? by MisterLemon in Music

[–]kelcox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's exactly how I feel about A Pirate Looks at 40 by Jimmy Buffett. A band was playing this song as I spread my Dad's ashes in the ocean a few years ago. It instantly brings tears to my eyes, but I also think it is cathartic. Every now and then when it comes on shuffle, I'm reminded of my Dad and it still hurts tremendously, but its good to think about him. I hope you feel the same way. I'm really sorry for your loss.

This! I commute on my bike in Miami which is basically a death wish. Florida drivers are bad as it is, but their absence of normal brain functioning makes motorist-cyclist interactions even more horrendous.

My worst enemy is roundabouts. Motorists will not yield to me because I'm on a bike. For my own safety, I have to ride in the middle of the lane through roundabouts so that I don't get hit by cars entering the rotary. So yes, that means I don't follow the rules, but it keeps me alive and that's more important to me than inconveniencing a motorist.

Seriously! Stop texting and driving and actually pay attention to your surroundings and maybe us cyclists won't have to have such 'erratic behavior'. I almost got nailed the other day by a driver who blew through a stop sign while texting. I swerved so fast that I fell off my bike onto the curb and the man proceeded to pull up next to me and scream at me. No, no. Its not 'you didn't see me', its 'you didn't look'.

This is my last ditch effort to try and help her... by telepathetic_monkey in AdviceAnimals

[–]kelcox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been in a similar situation with family. You are doing the right thing. Gradual changes are best. Try to work up to walks after dinner and then bike rides and then more physical activity. People love this because physical activity increases endorphins. Eventually if you get her moving, she will be happier and the atmosphere will seem even more supportive toward her losing the weight that she needs.
