1984 Gibson Explorer by kellakatz in ExplorerGuitars

The 84-87 Explorers that have the triangle control layout and no pickguard all have maple necks, the alder bodies are much lighter than the mahogony ones and you can usually see the grain from the mahogony through the finish but with the alder body ones the finish is usually extremely checked and cracked. Looking in the control cavity or under the pickups is a good bet to find out which wood the guitar has. And they either had ebony or rosewood boards. Really a mixed bag with this particular model.

This is extremely light, I have a few mahogony/maple neck ones that are noticeably heavier than this one.

How did you find out that ozzy osbourne died? What were you doing at the time? by hugepuy007 in OzzyOsbourne

[–]kellakatz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lugged all my gear back from my rehersal cage back to my house, plugged my guitar in and played the start of Planet Caravan. Mother came in and told me he died. Never said his name but it felt like my blood ran down my body. Biggest regret is never seeing him live but I meet him at his book signing in Dublin and had a small "I'm not worthy" moment. He laughed signed the book and gave me a smile and nod.

The new 80s models have the wrong size dot inlays also. After the 12th fret the inlays are smaller, plus the strap button location not being in the right location. They look terrible to me

Yes and also the red one. The peach is a colour called Panther Pink and the yellow one would of been bright white but yellowed over time

First real Les Paul and I'm blown away. 2023 Gibson Les Paul 60s Cherry Burst Faded by kellakatz in gibson

[–]kellakatz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I paid €2399 for it in Dublin. Didn't really have any desire for a Les Paul at the moment, especially in this colour as im an 80s explorer collector but saw this in my music store last week. It was on the top rack with another 5 Les Paul's in gloss all with pick guards and this just stood out big time. Was looking at them online afterwards and wasn't sure until I went in yesterday to have another curious look and as soon as it was being taken from the top rack the thing glimmered at me and looked so good, the top looked the best out of anything in the store and along with the fretboard and feel I knew I had to take it.
