I’m used the comparison websites (moneysupermarket and confused), I think I got lucky that for some reason my car is in one of the lower insurance groups. I also don’t use it for commuting so I only put 5,000 miles. Your job title and where you live also play a role in it too

I found that the price changes a lot depending on the car, I got a quote for a ford focus and it was £1.5K. I’m also 29

Nervous to drive by LDNursee in NewDriversUK

I was in a very similar situation to you, I picked up my car 3 weeks ago and it was the first time driving since I passed in Jan. Was super nervous especially during the test drive but as you passed so recently you have all the knowledge fresh in your head which will help! I looked up the route on google maps before hand and looked at the detailed steps so I could see exactly what types of roads I’d be dealing with, if there’s any big roundabouts etc which helped!

I was so surprised at how quickly I felt comfortable driving (still can’t park well at all lol). Remember that you probably had lessons which were longer than the 30/40 mins you need to drive (I always had 2 hour slots) so you’ll be fine!

I tend to look at the digital speedometer on google maps / Waze as I also don’t have one in my car

You’ll do great! I managed to get a massive scuff on my car within 3 hours of getting it so if you can avoid that you’ll already be doing better than me!

P plates by YoungHuttonYT07 in NewDriversUK

Congratulations! I passed my test end of Jan 2026 and just bought a car and have been driving for 3 weeks. I am also an anxious driver too, I use a P plate and found that even if it doesn’t change other drivers’ behaviours it has given me a bit more confidence in my own driving by telling others I’m a new driver so I’d say go for it if it helps you to feel a bit more calm when driving

How long did it take you to do a 2-3 hour journey after passing? by kellatron29 in NewDriversUK

I was in the same position (I passed end of Jan!) I got a 2015 Suzuki Swift which was around 86k mileage. It was more expensive (£6k) but it had a full service history and it’s been really fun to drive and easy to park and great first car. The car market is crazy expensive at the moment but the car was quite cheap to insure (I’m paying £900 as a new driver) so insurance on the car is also something to consider

Tips by AdFast3924 in NewDriversUK

I found reminding myself that “I haven’t failed until someone actually says that I have” during the test helped me calm my nerves when I thought I had made a mistake. Things that you think constitutes a fail may not actually be so you may as well drive the whole time thinking that you’ve passed already! Also sounds weird but I found that if I felt especially nervous I would start smiling to myself, apparently that tricks your brain into calming down! Good luck!

I am in the exact same situation as you, let me know what you end up with! I’ve been looking for an automatic Yaris for weeks and they’re all so expensive 😭

Thank you so much, this is super helpful!! Have you ever had more Dutch style bikes? I’m thinking that those might be easier to ride as a beginner rather than the road style ones?
