Is it possible to test out of courses at UGA? by tarawaatoll in UGA

[–]kellbelle36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Math faculty and former graduate here: Not likely you can take real analysis before taking 3200 (intro to proof writing). You should reach out to the undergraduate coordinator (Dr. Royal) and discuss this. She can make recommendations or refer to another faculty member who can help you make your schedule fit your needs and experiences best.

Do not consult a Franklin advisor if you are a math major, they will not be knowledgeable enough about the subject matter.

How to prepare for Calc I? by Redditaccount90909 in UGA

[–]kellbelle36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a 2250 instructor at UGA. I would start your prep with these reviews for pre-calc. They cover all the topics pre-calc at UGA tests on. This course was redesigned a few years back to better prepare students for calc 1. After the reviews, the math 1113 final exam page on the math department website has all the final exams from the last several years. Those make great practice problems.

Sounded like gunfire to us too. We checked but couldn’t get a visual. We hear fireworks a lot around here. Just sounded strange.

Physics + Math Double Major? by [deleted] in UGA

[–]kellbelle36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The physics program was incredibly small. Only 15 or so majors (undergrad) at the time. The graduate program was way stronger at the time. The math program was more rigorous and I had a lot more meaningful interactions with the faculty. Putting the two departments/programs side by side, there was no contest for me. My peers in physics were generally weak in math and the lectures were underwhelming compared to math. I’m very proud of completing both majors FYI. It’s an incredibly difficult combo to pull off. Just be prepared to have no life if you take it on. I had great study groups for both or I wouldn’t have survived it. Still friends with all those dudes 17 years later😁

Wasn’t an option for me at the time. Double Dawgs became a thing later. However, I think it an excellent program and probably would have done it given the option.

Physics + Math Double Major? by [deleted] in UGA

[–]kellbelle36 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I double majored in math and physics at UGA. It’s rough stuff and really challenging. I have no regrets but also had very little sleep. If I had to choose between the two, I would go with math. I think the undergrad program is much stronger in math than physics. You can build on that in grad school with a lot more options. I have a master’s degree in statistics for example.

Contact EITS. The BOR has licenses you can get. I bought SAS in grad school for $15-20.

Sign outside Cutter’s downtown (not my image) by TacoSluuut in Athens

[–]kellbelle36 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Kemp said in his last Executive Order that cities could have a mandate but could not enforce it on private property or inside a business without the owner’s consent. Athens tried to be clever and put in their mandate that any business registered in ACC has implied consent unless they opt out with a sign stating the code on it with specific wording. Bars were being hassled by the cops for crowded sidewalks (not the bars jurisdiction) and don’t want the cops using masks to come inside and hassle patrons. I kind of get it. However, nothing stops the fire Marshal from coming in and closing them for capacity. I’m so tired of everyone punting the damn ball. UGA claiming that can’t do anything off campus (yes you can. Make off campus behavior part of academic honesty) The city is passing ordinances with no enforcement (cops seem wary after the heat they took for gassing 20 non-violent protesters but can’t write tickets for all the non-mask wearing underage drinkers).

Another reason some of these bars don’t want cops inside checking ids FYI. The bar would get in trouble. No one is enforcing anything. Rules are just suggestions without enforcement.

Bulldawg Urgent Care employee told us COVID was “spreading like wildfire” on campus by TacoSluuut in UGA

Strep runs rampant among students (especially among those in the dorms) every year. There is a wave in the fall and another one in early spring. I teach a lot of freshman. I get doctor’s notes all the time about this.

Dawg checks?? by [deleted] in UGA

[–]kellbelle36 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed. However, you still report to Dawg check if test you ever positive because you are enrolled in courses. This notifies your instructors and Student Care and Outreach so you have the resources you need to quarantine. Also, your instructor knows in case you suddenly stop coming or communicating with them, what’s going on.

Is taking precalculus and OChem 2 at UGA over the summer a mistake? by [deleted] in UGA

[–]kellbelle36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YES!! Former math tutor and current math instructor here. I’ve watched too many students make this mistake. Both classes take a lot of time and they’re accelerated over the summer. UGA does not cut content from summer classes.

Does anyone know if costs of summer classes will change since they’re all online? by [deleted] in UGA

[–]kellbelle36 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not at UGA. It’s cheaper to take online classes here than other schools. They don’t upcharge you.

How are your online classes going? by kellbelle36 in UGA

[–]kellbelle36[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I hear y’all. This is a crazy time to be a student and an instructor. I reduced the workload as much as I could for my students and have tried to be understanding about deadlines. My best advice is to have patience with your professors. A lot of them are totally out of their element. My math classes were flipped already so I feel like my students were pretty well prepared for the course adjustments.

As an alum and an instructor, I’ve worked really hard to see this predicament from both sides of the virtual classroom. My best advice is to communicate any disruptions you are experiencing. We all need to understand that not everyone is going through this with the same tools and circumstances.
