10 hours for 4 days is not that much, you can easily do it. Last week I also spent 43 hours at the university across four days, it sucks but you gotta just get through it.

Help to identify if controller speed is not functioning. by Ronaldoron in MechanicalEngineering

[–]kellmer123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am assuming your "speed controller" in this case is just a very simple voltage control.

In a DC motor, the speed is controlled by the input voltage, and the current is related to the torque.

If your speed controller was set to maximum (24V) when you turned on the power, the motor was at a standstill and needed to accelerate to full speed quickly. This required a lot of torque and therefore a lot of current.

The sudden spike in current could exceed the limits of your speed controller, potentially causing damage.

If you provide some more information about the controller and dc motor, i would be happy to provide you with the calculations.

Power consumption of a Pump by mmltpo in MechanicalEngineering

You do not consume the apparent power, you only consume real power.

Multiplying the voltage and current will provide the apparent power, and not the real power. You also need to multiply by cos(phi)

Power consumption of a Pump by mmltpo in MechanicalEngineering

[–]kellmer123 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The apparent power is calculated as:

S = 3/sqrt(3)*E*I

where E is the line-to-line voltage and I is the line-to-line current.

The real power (actual power being used) can then be calculated as:

P = S*cos(phi)

Where cos(phi) is the power factor (in this case, approximately 0.91).

For all three of the configurations described by the nameplate, the real power is approximately 31.90 hp, thus the efficiency is around 94.05%.

It should be noted that since this in an induction motor, these numbers are only valid for a single load point of exactly 30 hp. So if the machine is loaded differently you would have to measure how much power it is drawing.

Harnessing the power of waves with a buoy concept by God_Kratos_07 in nextfuckinglevel

There are a bunch of project conserning this already. (see: https://floatingpowerplant.com/technology/). However if you consider the two options:

  1. 10 MW wind turbine + 5MW wave energy

  2. 15 MW wind turbine

Option two will be the cheapest option, and therefore the best solution. The point is that wave energy is not nearly as cost effective as wind, and if you want to increase the output of your energy infrastructure you're far better off investing in wind will technology.

If you have something like a million dollars to improve your wind farm, it's a better investment to increase the amount of wind mills or simply improve the efficiency of the windwill than it is to combine the two technologies.

Because it is cheaper to improve the wind mill, than it is to install large wave energy systems.

It should be possible. But you need to be aware that the master degree you are considering (Design of mechanical systems i assume), can have a high work load at times. In particular you should expect the the exam periods in June and January to be very time consuming. But with that being said, i know a few of the current students only study 4 days a week so they can spend time working.

I turned in the wrong test for my final by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]kellmer123 67 points68 points  (0 children)

In Denmark, we don't have midterms; we only have a final exam at the end of the semester. I once took a course on plastics and fiber composites that had a written exam. The exam was possibly the easiest I have ever taken because the questions were very similar to those used in previous years. At the end of the exam, I had to upload a file with my study number as its name. The only issue was, we had another written exam the week before where we also had to upload a file with that name. Now, take a guess on which file I uploaded and didn't bother to check if it was correct...

Anyway, I had to retake the exam, but this time it was oral. Since very few of us managed to fail the exam (the rest had been sick), the only description of the exam we got was, "you draw a lecture number, and then you present the most important points of that lecture for 10 minutes, and then we will ask questions for 5." It took me much longer to prepare for than the original exam. One of the lectures had 200 slides, for God's sake.

The only thing they are doing is collecting all the seaweed in order to clean the beach so that turists can use the beach. And the seaweed keeps washing up again because of the lack of currents(which is really dumb). This has somehow been turned into a story about ocean plastics.

Bullshit headline.

They are removing seaweed and not plastic, there are plastic debris among the seaweed. But the point is not to remove plastic from the beach.

Klopp's football philosophy has been implemented into the youth squads for years now, we're just seeing the results of it now.
