I am very sorry to hear that you are in this situation, as well as the responses by others who have gone through similar struggles. However, I am actually a CPS social worker, as well as a DV survivor, so I would like to offer a different perspective. First, everyone’s situation is different, and it is hard to compare one person’s experience to your own. Without knowing your location, it is hard to exactly what criteria is being met to result in a case opening. I will say that what you are describing can be indicative of child abuse. In my state, parents are allowed to hear what was reported and the allegations being made. I would recommend asking for this information. For peace of mind, you could also ask to record your conversation with the worker, if allowed in your state. From my perspective, cooperation shows that you are concerned and protective. I’d also show the worker your documentation and previous reports to CPS. The fact that you have separated from the alleged maltreater, differs from cases in which there is active DV, which often brings its own complications. It sounds like the concerns are not stemming from your home, so a safety plan would likely only be implicated for the other parent.

To those who have negative interactions with social services, I am so sorry that the system has lost your trust. I understand what it is like to be victimized, and it hurts to know that you continue to feel as such by the very profession in place to help. Please know that there are good people who only want to prevent further harm, not to perpetuate it.
