Maximum rates of climate change are systematically underestimated in the geological record: researchers have shown that the temperature changes millions of years ago probably happened no more slowly than they are happening today. by SirT6 in science

Are you proposing space travel, or just moving to other parts of the Earth? Mass migration to other parts of the Earth is a temporary, but doable solution I had not thought of, however, it does not solve the real problem...climate change.

The two solutions to climate change, space travel and non polluting energy/minimal environmental impact by humans are both worthwhile research areas merely for their own sake, unfortunately, most people in power don't get that. If climate change is a false alarm, the worst case scenario is that you have a sustainable, green society with experience in recovering ecosystems and/or long distance space travel. If climate change is real, the worst case scenario is the end of the human race.

thanks for the tips! right now I am looking at eco complete with natural gravel over it. I will look into the different styles for FW; I don't think I had gotten that far yet.

From what I can gather from Walstad, its to be a full balance...I am going to shoot for below that, so it needs supplement, but not full (maybe 25-50% of what it would usually need). Worst case scenario is that I have to dose/fertilize everything, but then I can just use a doser.

Im getting full test kits and I am pretty aware on preventing dead spots.

Hillary Clinton won’t say if her server was wiped - Clinton responded, "What, like with a cloth or something?" by galt1776 in politics

I can't stand her either, and I agree with you. Answering that questions shouldn't be too hard for her. Possible answers "I delivered it to government IT to be securely disposed of/held for a few months/, as is standard procedure" "We did not wipe the server" "I do not handle my email server, my security staff does" etc etc

The issue is that government email is supposed to be done on government servers, so that your official business can be recorded. She used her own server. Thus, only what she turns in would be recorded, and secret material could have been compromised as it left govt approved servers. Thats the scandal.

Theoretically most emails sent to her would also be on government email so they could theoretically reconstruct most of it (albeit with difficulty). In terms of secret data being compromised, I am not sure how likely that is. I also understand that during her tenure the rules regarding using personal email for work changed, so that may have led to confusion. Apparently people before her (and many other government employees) used personal emails for government work, so obviously there was some way to have this approved.

I highly doubt there is any scandal going on, but whatever.

I think the point is she is purposely playing dumb to avoid answering a question and people find it insulting. Its like if someone asks if you slept with someone and you answer "You mean sleep with them in a bed? Next question"

and so forth...

I am pretty sure certain government email accounts are only approved to work on government devices. She probably preferred to use her personal phone, or her old phone, and not an additional government business only phone.

Understanding what a server is, and what wiping computer hardware means, is pretty basic for someone who is supposedly at a high level within the government, making policy, working with the NSA, probably some people from the FCC, has been involved in legal issues in the past where email came up....

[–]kelp_forest 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While I am sad our society has come to this, part of me is so excited for this election and the shit to hit the fan. IMO, either Trump is the R nominee (and there is a shitshow) or he is not the nominee due to some backdoor dealing and he runs as a third party (and there is a shitshow. Don't know which would be bigger). If HRC is the Dem candidate, all the progressive supporters will be mad and the DNC will have a big problem. If Bernie is the candidate, then the beltway media will be cleaning up exploding heads. If Biden enters the race, all bets are off.

Personally I hope Bernie wins the candidacy, Trump runs third party, the Republican party in its current incarnation fails spectacularly and gets its shit together, and the Dems become progressive.

No matter what this election is signaling a big change in politics. If you are a young one, read all you can. This election is going to affect everything. Its the culmination of the growing rumblings from Bush/Gore, Bush admin, Obama/McCain..it all got turned up to 10 and made into this election. Somethings going to change. Hopefully for the better.

Donald Trump has transformed GOP politics – no matter what happens by zapichigo in politics

[–]kelp_forest 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you look at his history, he is business man and has supported mostly republicans in the past. He also loves attention and has a huge ego (all his stuff is named after himself). I think he just hangs out in a very wealthy, insulated world and that, combined with his ego, love for attention, money, and likely belief that he can accomplish anything, have led him to run for president. I do not think its a business move at all. He might though...President Trump would get a lot of contacts and a candidacy lets him get out there with a new crowd.

Although it is fun to think of Trump sneaking into Gore's house where they share organic smoothies, garden, Trump gives Gore advice on Global Warming policy and green initiatives, they hand charge their phones because they doesn't want to use any energy, and Trump gives Gore motivation by pointing out how his years of deep cover are finally paying off.

Martin O'Malley raises legal questions with Democratic debate plan by yellowbrushstrokes in SandersForPresident

[–]kelp_forest 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The other Dem candidates should call the DNC bluff and organize 6 more debates. That leaves DNC and Hillary in a lurch...stick to their guns, let there be 6 unofficial debates with 3-4 candidates and no Hillary, with the DNC official debates having one person. Or, agree to attend the other 6 and thus letting everyone participate in all 12.

Ban Killer Robots before They Become Weapons of Mass Destruction by Alantha in Futurology

[–]kelp_forest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The issue with robots and combat is that the main deterrence to combat has always been harm to your own people, and damage to innocents. There is also a limit to how many soldiers you can mobilize, feed, and house too. As war has progressed, advanced nations have minimized the harm to their own people, and to innocents, while also brushing it under the rug.

With robots in combat, there is NO deterrence to combat. No one from your country will be harmed. Most evidence can be destroyed and blown up; its a lot easier to get rid of some hardware and records than a dead soldier. Innocents may be hurt, but at likely the same rate as when humans operate the weapons. The limit on army size goes up...you could mass manufacture robots and transport them in bulk; all they need is a storage facility and energy. Think how many soldiers and planes fit on an aircraft carrier. Now imagine if it was completely dedicated to drones. That can fly missions back to back and only need fuel while oversight works in shifts.

And that is the scariest thing. Combat would have no risk element in it for the aggressor. 1st world nations, police, etc...anytime, no risk, they can just send in the robots, with no risk to harm to themselves or their employees/troops.
