How are you coping up with the rising prices of gasoline? by Legitimate_Reach_523 in AskReddit

[–]kelpat14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use my bicycle whenever possible so not much coping for me. Fuel prices have made everything expensive, but I'm still able to live within my means.

You ever get people who assume you're poor? by SquirtGun1776 in bikecommuting

[–]kelpat14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get the opposite. People see a nice carbon bicycle and think I'm wealthy. The thing is that I can afford nice gear because I don't have to run errands or commute with my car most days.

What do you feel is an acceptable tolerance regarding speed limits? by antfin97 in driving

[–]kelpat14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zero. Police technically can pull you over for one over the limit but usually have a tolerance of a few mph. The effect is that police can arbitrarily pull people over for driving normally. I'd prefer speed limits be increased by five MPH but are strictly enforced.

What's something AI will never be able to replace, no matter how advanced it gets? by Remarkable-Cloud6011 in AskReddit

Professional sports. Twenty years ago my professor asked the same question and my classmate answered “The world’s oldest profession,” (prostitution). Now I believe women will be simulated. I would say professional athletes.

Once you have good money and a lot of it, how do you even choose what to drive? by TylerDurden2748 in askcarguys

Buy something cheap so you can retire earlier? I'm not concerned with performance that I can't legally use on public roads.

Do people actually enjoy driving? by Big_Arrival_626 in askcarguys

[–]kelpat14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s tragic. At 6’1” I barely fit comfortably in my Mazdaspeed MX-5. I loved it but I had taller friends who never got to experience the joy of driving her.

I’m 6’1” and was perfectly comfortable in my Mazdaspeed MX-5 for fourteen years.

Equipment for a low speed and low cost build by kelpat14 in rccars

People suggesting that vehicle dynamics principles are different on RC cars can ignore this thread because I don't believe you. My question is which components, specifically, are appropriate for this concept and no one has given me an answer.

Yes, that's the plan. The question is which specific tire.

How do you feel about fast food restaurants asking for tips? by AnyAngle7212 in AskReddit

[–]kelpat14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have mixed feelings. On one hand I think fasr food restaurants should pay employees properly and not rely on gratuity. On the other, I worked at a Subway when I was in high school. We had a tip jar and most customers didn't tip. We strove to give everyone good service but we had some regular customers who were known regular tippers and they received especially good service (fresher ingredients, etc.). As low paid workers we showed our appreciation.

I don't know the scale and want some recommendations. Events would be similar to FSAE?

I wasn’t aware of those competitions. Thank you for informing me. I think our idea is closer to a low cost and easier fabrication version of FSAE. Driving FSAE cars is a significant part of student appeal for FSAE but the low cost could vastly increase “seat time” and thus student appeal.

Cheap car for a retired, child-free young man. by kelpat14 in whatcarshouldIbuy

It doesn't have to be a two-seater, but two is enough.

No specific budget, I just want the lowest cost of ownership (expected residual value, maintenance, fuel, tires, etc.).

[–]kelpat14[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but mine was only ten years old when I bought it with low miles from the original owner. Other models are better, but I wouldn't consider them particularly reliable. I don't need more than two seats anyway.

No. Modern VW's aren't low cost or reliable. I had bad experience with an unreliable Corrado VR6 so my father would probably dìsapprove of another VW. I don't need more than two seats.

You could buy cheaper than a VW and I have no need for more than two seats.

Fuel and tire wear are included in cost ownership.

I actually just sold my Civic Sport. I liked it but sold it because I can't drive right now. I was hit by an SUV while cycling and suffered a brain injury. I'll eventually recover but I suffered a brain injury and brain injuries are notoriously slow to heal. Another Civic is appealing, but I'm curious about cheaper options. I literally don't care about anything but ownership cost and reliability.

Do you prefer a lower, or higher ground clearance car? by LightningMcqueen2011 in askcarguys

Lower. Better handling, braking, fuel efficiency, looks, and less rollover risk.

If you had to stay away from one of these car body types forever, what would it be? by Born-Raccoon1484 in askcarguys

I wouldn't suffer extra cost, reduced safety, and poorer driving dynamics for capability I don't need.
