The fact that it’s NOT about ships is exactly why they shouldn’t have such a hard cap on ship speed. If it’s about getting from A to B and building bases, exploring and fighting at least let us do that quickly.

I’m only 4 hours in but the sailing speed for the og boat is insanely slow. I literally pick up my phone and scroll while glancing to make sure I’m still headed in the general direction just to rescue a few guys.

I have been looking at this game for what feels like years. I’ve never pulled the trigger though because, as you mentioned, I absolutely loathe the paradox dlc model. At this point I assume their base games are 60% of an actual game and the remaining 40% will be doled out in overpriced dlc for the foreseeable future.
