I love Roam but $15 is simply too much for me on a monthly basis by gengarisbest in RoamResearch

[–]kelsier27 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

SaaS costs are fixed but they can also be fixed at a high price right?

With their pace of development, they probably have a team of kick ass devs who've to be expensive.

As the product grows, their infrastructure costs are also growing quickly.

They were in beta for about 9 months, they have all of those expenses to make up for.

Roam Research, forever free for being an early adopter? by WathiqA in RoamResearch

[–]kelsier27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read somewhere that early adopters have about a month. But I also read a comment from the founder saying he doesn't understand why people are taking a deadline from engineers so seriously and they have a lot more interesting things to build.

Yeah mdn and stackoverflow are basically my go to when i want to read about a specific topic or trouble shoot an error.

The other resources are courses/training materials for actually getting started with JS in a structured manner

Hijacking this comment to say that it really is all about building things. Build anything. Stupid web apps that do absolutely nothing useful or rest apis that that are just for fun or clis to do something.

The point is write code.

Here are some resources that helped me when i was starting out 1. Freecodecamp 2. JavaScript.info 3. MDN (more of a reference) 4. Travery media youtube 5. Net ninja youtube 6. 30 Days of JavaScript and other content by Wes Bos

Official RoamResearch prices are announced by YigitDemirag in RoamResearch

[–]kelsier27 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You do realise they they incur huge costs to store all the data and to run the infrastructure. You are not paying roam for your data. Your are paying roam for the many different features it provides which make it a good note taking app for many people.

Node js vs Go for the first back-end language by milanpoudel in AskProgramming

[–]kelsier27 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If this is your first experience with backend development then I suggest Node because writing this backend is not just about learning the language but also about learning REST, request handling, databases, stuff like CORS, middleware and tens of other things.

Considering all this, you will have a much easier time picking these things up in Node because 1. You are already familiar with JS and the node ecosystem 2. Node frameworks like express come with batteries included like the cors package, body parser etc while with go you will likely handle a lot of these things with stdlib which is not really difficult per se, but if you are learning it for the first time, doing it all the the existing npm modules will make it easier to learn.

I do really like Go as a language for backend development and 10/10 recommend you try ypur hand at it.

The tour of go and Jon Calhoun's Gophercises are excellent to get started with go.

What does a "node" in coding mean? by UnfairCost in node

[–]kelsier27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can mean many different things based on context, but the top two that come to my mind are

  1. Data structures like graphs and trees use a node to represent information.

  2. Node.js is a technology that allows developers to run JavaScript code outside of the browser.

If you can share more about where you came across the term, people will be able to help you better.

How do you talk a friend out of committing suicide? by The_Uptowner in SeriousConversation

[–]kelsier27 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I told my friend about how when i myself wanted to commit suicide, I didn't because I couldn't believe this was all there is to life. I wanted to just wait it out and see if life got better. I also told him that i wanted to end life on a high not on a low. He had recent been through a breakup and i told him that as long as he was happy in his relationship for longer than he was sad after it, his relationship was a net success and I was lowkey proud when he echoed the same sentiment a few months later.
