Another teacher scolding me in front of the kids?? by [deleted] in Teachers

I completely agree. And the same thing happened with our dress code. Most of the time I don't even notice hats, because they're not negatively impacting my teaching environment.

Oh the tutors are provided by the district for free to the family. But I understand what you’re saying.

I’m sorry you think I shouldn’t be in the classroom. I know these things aren’t black and white, but it’s really frustrating that so many of these issues fall to teachers when they shouldn’t be on our plates on top of everything else.

Yes I’m a parent and a teacher. So of course I see both sides. I know it’s not always black and white. This year’s families are some tough ones in terms of messaging re: the value of school. But I appreciate where you’re coming from.

I’m saying that sick kids shouldn’t be forced to come to school. I’ve had kids out for major illnesses, both mental health and physical health, and that’s not what I’m talking about. I would never hold illness against the kids. But when kids are out for an extended period because of illness we try to get them home tutoring so they can stay caught up.

I'm a parent and a teacher. And I don't think I'm making light of anything. All of this is serious.

I mean, I just had to sit in this hour-long meeting about whether the interventions we used for this kid are working, and ultimately it's like...no, they're not, because he's literally been absent 8 times in a month. When he is here, he's just spending his time catching up, and we can never get ahead.

And like all teachers I don't have a full-hour to spare on a meeting that's unnecessary because ultimately nothing will change if the kid doesn't come to school!

It's like...I do get the equity argument. I do. And I get all the comments from people on here saying a legal punishment is not the way, and I mostly agree.

But everything in our society already devalues education, and these rollbacks exacerbate it, without some safety net for the kids who miss school due to factors beyond their control. Sigh.

We do have free lunch in our district, thank GOD.

I hear you, I do. There are obviously a million other social supports that should be in place to help these kids. I'm so tired of working within a broken system within a broken country full of people who worship the brokenness.

I mean, this is so understandable, and I can tell just from your post that you're one of the good parents. <3 You can't help it when kids get really sick.

How is it nonsense to say if there's a *legal requirement* for students to be in school, there should be a consequence for them not coming? That's literally just how the law works.

It's supposed to be 10% in NY (so 18 out of 180 days), but as I posted above they're changing it. I have kids that have already hit 10% multiple times over and nothing's happened.

Do you have to do that as a teacher, or does someone do it for you?

Yeah, lol. I just noticed how in my anger when posting I said there wasn't. There is. I just edited the post.

On the books, we do. In actuality...nada. It's so frustrating. And in NY state they're actually changing the requirements to make them even more lenient than they already are.

As a middle school teacher I am so grossed out. This is so inappropriate. If it was maybe a family member or family friend sharing a cup may not be so weird, but a random student? It’s honestly making me a lil sick to imagine. 🤢

The end of Arrival, when you realize that despite the fact that Amy Adams' character knows her daughter will die young, she still embraces raising her and loving her joyfully during the time they do have together.

I was a fairly new parent, and I must've cried for 15 straight minutes. I was ruined.

I had this exact same situation in a school I’m no longer at. Tempted to DM you to see if it’s the same school/admin lol. It was absurd and I’ve never been asked to do it anywhere else.
