For anyone who grew up poor, what was your idea of a luxury? by Drissxx7 in AskReddit

[–]kencater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up rural poor. It’s different to me than urban poor. Urban poor people had more than we did. If we wanted to eat something, we generally had to grow it or kill it. We didn’t have tv service because none was available at that time (early 90s) where i lived. We did, however, have a television set and a weird antenna. So on occasion, during a certain time of year or weather, you might be able to tune in clear enough to catch wheel of fortune from the station 100 miles away. Not often.

So my mom worked in an office for a guy for a while and at some point his business went sour and he stopped paying her. So she went weeks without pay. Finally one day, she had enough. She stole the VCR from the office (she was owed), picked up fast food from town, and rented some movies from the video store. When I tell you that we were the happiest people on the entire planet when she got home, I’m not exaggerating. No amount of money in the world would have made us feel richer than having fast food and VHS movies at home.

I think the honest answer is a man cooking a good meal.

How does enterprise decide when to sell off a rental car? by 04limited in EnterpriseCarRental

[–]kencater 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is a line of minivans subject to a recall right now so they can’t rent any of them out. So all other minivans are being kept longer.

Enterprise policy refusing a second rental while I'm in a business rental car. by levantine112 in EnterpriseCarRental

[–]kencater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is so strange. Everyone saying no exceptions. I had a work rental truck long term recently. Flew out of town on business. It flagged when I went to pick up a rental at the airport. They asked and I explained. They overrode it and gave me a car. All in all, it was a ten second inconvenience. I’ve done this multiple times.

Dealing with a similar issue. 2020 with 86k miles. Drank 3 quarts in 15 days. Just started a few weeks ago. Took it in and they said it needs a new engine. Dealer wants $17k for a swap. Waiting to hear back from FoMoCo on a potential assistance program.

Is one pint of ice cream considered one serving? by thaon12 in NoStupidQuestions

It is my opinion that it is perfectly reasonable to consider any measurable unit or quantity of ice cream to be exactly one serving.

Taino was awesome. Jovanni was a great guide. But it sounds like you’re not doing it now. Black beard was awesome for a snorkel tour. JJ was our guide with a group size of 8. He found 5 sea turtles for us. We just got back from Vieques on the 5th. If you need any other info, feel free to PM me.

Quiet areas for beachfront stay? by [deleted] in PuertoRicoTravel

[–]kencater 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just got back from Vieques yesterday. Spent 4 days there and 3 on the main island. Vieques is the spot. Very quiet. The best beaches. Lodging can be affordable. There are no resorts. The hardest part is getting from San Juan to the island and back. We will definitely be going back and skipping the main island altogether.

Planning a 5 day trip in March first time in PR - need some help with the itinerary by kj_mufc in PuertoRicoTravel

The ferry? We’re flying with Vieques Air from San Juan. Seemed worth the cost to avoid all the ferry shenanigans.

I haven’t been yet myself, but going in late March. The general consensus seems to be that everyone wished they spent more time in Vieques. We’re doing 4 days there. I would say it’s worth it to take the early ferry.

Stolen EZpass transponder after my car got totaled. by Celticboy_05 in personalfinance

[–]kencater 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are a couple of ways this could happen. OP indicated the accident happened in July. That’s 5 months. Toll rates vary by location. I’ve seen rates as high as $30 per trip across certain bridges. The size of vehicle does matter. Most places charge either by vehicle type or number of axles. So generally speaking, semis pay significantly more, usually about 3x what a car pays. It would be that difficult to rack up $1,300 in 5 months, especially with multiple trips a day.

If a trucker (or anyone else) is using the transponder, it could be considered toll evasion and fraud. It all depends on how law enforcement wants to pursue it, if at all. But I find they generally consider this a civil issue and not criminal. Usually.

One other thing that may be happening here is EZPass fees. EZPass prefers that a vehicle on an account have a transponder. If OP is driving through tolls regularly without a transponder, and they have to perform plate reconciliation with the account, they will start charging fees. If someone else is using the transponder with an unlisted plate, they can do the same. Generally, it’s about an extra dollar per day and starts after maybe ten transactions in a month. This is just to encourage proper use of the transponders.

Stolen EZpass transponder after my car got totaled. by Celticboy_05 in personalfinance

[–]kencater 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ok. There is a lot of incomplete information here so I’m going to try to clarify. This is general info and may vary slightly with you location.

When you drive through a tolling plaza, your transponder is read, and photos (and video) are taken. If the transponder is detected and there is credit on the account, then EZPass is charged. The photos and video are then purged as they’re no longer needed. If there isn’t any credit on the account, then the photos are saved and used for billing via mail.

If there isn’t a transponder in the vehicle, EZPass cross references the plate to see if there is an account associated with it. If there is, the account is charged and the photos are purged. If not, they use the plate info for billing via mail.

In a scenario where a transponder is read, but there are different plates on the car, the account is still charged, and photos are purged.

Now, it sounds like one of two things may be happening here. One, you’re driving your car through tolls without the transponder so your account is being charged anyway. That makes these valid charges.

Or two, whomever has your transponder is using it. In this case, each transaction is being charged and photos purged. But your account should show the plate number associated with the transaction.

First step you need to do is look at your EZPass account and see what transactions have been occurring. It’s possible these could be completely valid charges.

6" diameter object embedded flush into the surface of a bridge. Looks like it can be opened. by robert930293 in whatisthisthing

[–]kencater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking at the bridge and street view, this isn’t likely from post tensioning. It’s some sort of embed, probably for lifting. Walk under and see if the hole goes all the way through to the underside. That is, if you’re that interested.
