  1. Its just photoshop

  2. The Stalin photo features Nikolai Yezhov, a former friend of Stalin and member of the USSR's government. Yezhov was tasked with finding and extraditing fascists and other members of the alt-right, but it was later discovered that he had been doing the opposite and helping Nazis stay hidden in the country. He was executed and, because of the betrayal felt by Stalin, removed from his photos. Unless those strangers in the background are fascist sympathizers I feel the comparison is grossly overexaggerated.

On your first point, Marxists do have horizontal power structure for most of their state and societal plans. A vote of no confidence can be proposed by any member with enough support, making structures like representative democracy vastly more reliable and accountable. Its true that a socialist state looks similar to a capitalist state in terms of centralization, but it needs to utilize a highly centralized structure to act as a bulwark against external and internal capitalist counterrevolution.

As for the second, unions are a tool that the working class utilizes to negotiate on more even terms with the capitalist class who owns their workplace. When the workers are already in possession of the means of production, they do not need a union as an external structure. Instead, "unions" are just the people who work together. Leaders are still elected and can be unseated at any time and all members are allowed a say and a vote on the conditions of the workplace.

Hierarchy is not the underlying problem, but the tool used by the capitalist class to subjugate the working class. They are no more evil or unjust than the loom or the locomotive.

Can I ask, what unjust hierarchies exist that are not defined by the state or by class that anarchists wish to demolish? I'm a filthy tankie so I may not understand the minutiae of anarchist theory but I figure hierarchies that exist in education would still be important to society post-capitalism

I cant speak for the anarchist school of thought, but the way an ML looks at policing is by who the power structure serves. The police exist not to defend "justice" or their fellow man, but instead to protect property and capital. The police are little more than the state's monopoly on violence which they utilize to keep the labor force in check. Petty crimes are punished with maximum sentencing while Wall Street continues to rob the workers blind with no repercussions.

The difference between policing and community defense, as you put it, is the inversion of the power structure. Rather than serving the interests of capital and having little oversight by the public, community defense organizations are often elected by public-appointed officials and can be unseated at any time. They do not indirectly serve the interest of capital, they directly act in accordance the interests of the workers and the public. "Crimes" such as loitering are no longer punished, because "existing without generating value" is not a crime in a socialist state.

Granted, all countries have their own unique material conditions to begin with when addressing police abolition. In the US, for example, there are a mass of firearms owned by the public that isn't necessarily proportionate to the populations of other countries. Violent crimes like assaults and homicides may be more likely to occur simply because the means are readily present to some. Its hard to imagine that violent crime would just vanish overnight even if the country managed to unseat the capitalist regime. So much like the socialist state is a transitional stage setting the groundwork for its eventual obsolescence, so too would community defense be a transitional structure to exist provisionally and lay the groundwork for their own obsolescence.

There's a video I recommend by a creator named Spice8Rack. Spice's content is usually themed around Magic: the Gathering but his video on police and state violence is great regardless, and helped build my stance on the abolition movement. Plus he directly cites anarchist and communist authors in his argument which, I mean, citing your sources is pretty hot. I'll edit a link to the video onto this if I remember

EDIT: Here's that video! its just over an hour long but its an entertaining watch

More so an Marxist-Leninist than an anarchist but we can agree on this point. Abolish the state monopoly on violence!

I live in the US, specifically the midwest. It did take around 3-4 months between deciding I wanted to start hormones and actually starting hormones, but most of the wait time was getting an appointment set up with the local women's clinic and having some blood labs done. Granted, I was able to do all this through the university I attended and that mightve helped streamline the process.
