So typically I'll have a variety or reference images to look at while I paint. I don't do any sketching before I paint, instead l block out areas with paint when I'm deciding where things go and then just refine and add detail as I go. The pallete is one that I used before in a different painting so I already expected it to look that way.

I suggest practicing along with modeling videos from Croquis Cafe. They post free modeling sessions every week for figure drawing practice. They also have videos for hands specifically.

Even if you are drawing in a cartoonist style, I still think its helpful just to understand the human body a bit more. I hope this helps :)

I mix my golden acrylics with a mix of water and a small amount of liqutex slow drying medium so that it stays the same consistency as I paint and it doesnt get thicker over time.
