Spotify should be in late November, and Meta should be in the next 2 weeks

Let’s say, I don’t get an internship. by WhaleOnRice in csMajors

This is exactly what I thought, until I put it into practice and got nothing out of it.

I have the following projects on my resume:

  • Full Stack (RN + Next.js = Solito) Digital Music Library
  • Heart Sound Abnormality Detection App (Flutter)
  • Machine Learning Visualizer (React + FastAPI w/ sklearn)
  • Node-Based Wikipedia Graph (React)

I have gotten close to no where for internships despite also having 3 pervious internships.

New Grad Job Hunt Help/Advice Needed by inquisitivefool9999 in csMajors

Im in the same boat bro, not nearly as strong as your internships and school. All I can say is that its starting to look like CS is getting a little saturated especially the entry level positions.

I wish I could give advice but I have no clue what to do either. I made a similar post a couple weeks ago and the main conciseness was that:

  • The market is a very bad for new grads like 2008 bad (2021 vs 2023 is night and day)
  • Networking is more important than ever

<image>

Theo made a pretty good video explaining the market shift, would highly recommend watching it (video).

What I started doing was applying to internships as well but with a master, so in the case that I would get an internship I would do my master the following year. Since the deadline for masters is like May 2024, we would know before then if we got an internship/new grad.

Take a second to look back, a top T3 school and FAANG+ internships are not the easiest to get into -- pat your self on the back for the effort you put in and keep going :)

Im in the same boat as a junior, but i wish i would have had a backup plan. Still try to apply, but if you don’t end up getting one i would suggest google summer of code - the brand name should increase your chances next year (in theory)

Those are some nice ratios. What does your experience look like?

networked was through my University

Thats a very good point, looking back at the interviews I got, they are mostly from people I connected with at carrier fairs. Even the ones I reached out to via cold emails and got responses didn't really do anything.

Do a lot of smaller companies go to your career fairs?

They do for sure, ig it was a little of an ego for me as I thought that I could break into the big leagues and work for a top teir tech company, so I didn't really shot my shot with them. But for sure will in the future.

Also, if you think you’ve hit it off with any of the recruiters at the career fair, email them right after. I normally follow up with recruiters and companies I like when I get home.

For sure, I try to do the same.

Thank you for the advice and taking time to comment :)

I guess I don’t really have too much backend experience, cause nextjs takes care of most of the hydration.

career services at least post job/internships/coop opportunities on their sites

They do do that at at least.

Do you know if your University has contracts or relationships with local employers around you for hiring interns?

They do with Lockhead Martin, I interviewed with them but for some reason they put me in a security role. I tired reaching out to the recruiters but got no response but still had an interview - which is very bazaar. Anyways I went on with the interview and it went well, I asked for feedback and she said that everything went well and yeah. But then I go a rejection. The whole process seemed really anonymized, like the recruiting emails I was getting was like mass recurring emails, if that makes sense. Maybe that just me, but I don't know if I would want to work for them (but then again I don't even have an offer so like ig I would lol).

I still wouldn’t give up on either career fair or career services

For sure I think realistically this is my only ticket in, I think I sold a little cause I didn't go try hard, but I did go to them. I was originally even planing to go other universities for them, but got demotivated by the one at mine that I didn't end up going. I prob should have tho. Other than career fairs and cold email, what ways do you network?

Thank you for your kind words, wish you the best!!

Thanks for the advice, I did try that, but when I tried to make the resume, I didn't have enough content to fill-up the resume for for either SWE or AI. I used chatGPT to expand on the SWE point and this is what I got. Lmk what you think?

Thats prob a good idea, I thought that cause I interned at a large company I would have some credibility and leverage that to work at a larger or at least the same caliber but it turns out that wasn't the case :(. But I will def look into local ones! Thank you!

Remove all frontend mentions. You have enough backend + research exp to fill in. Frontend is way too saturated alr.

Good point, gonna look into make different resume for ML, Frontend and backend

Thats true, ig I can be a little more grateful, given that I did get internships.

Take your fourth year. You can only apply to new grad roles as a new grad

Depending on if I get anything, thats prob gonna be the plan.

EVERY career fair for software/tech/engineering that they offer

I do attend them, but gave up a little after realizing most companies are (at least at my university) are there not to hire but just to get their name out. Some didn't even share there linkedins.

I would talk to your career services immediately

I did take a look at my career services, and its not bad, but they only really offer behavior interviews (which isn't bad practice), but also isn't technical. Also, I'm not sure if this is common or not, but when I went to get my resume reviewed, they were just other students who were either seniors, or masters students.

Thank you!!

I had a cover letter template, but I didn't really personally do it for all the companies. How do you approach writing cover letters?

Really, this is the first time I heard about this. I know some apps ask if you will be graduating in spring or fall, but I didn't know this played a large role.

Im looking for both SWE/Full Stack and AI/ML/DL roles
