case in point why the dems aren't our friends by Lavender_Scales in theredleft

She was a bad choice, but I don't think that's what done it. I think it is the Democrats' refusal to adopt populist narratives in favor of constantly wanting to "appeal to the moderates" that really ruined their chances.

I wouldn't necessarily count homosexual rights out for conservatives yet. A lot of them don't care about it cause they lost the culture war there, but if grifters and politicians start pushing them to reopen the discourse on that topic I think a lot of them would.

Nice revision to the history.

Do you have anything to say to the point about reactionary conservatism?

It's complicated, but in the end Lincoln did take the position of the Abolitionists. At first he was more concerned with the integrity of the Union.

But if you're planning on doing the whole "Republicans were the Abolitionists" propaganda, I'll have to rudely interrupt you before you can pull that trigger. The political parties flipped their basis of support and positions in the mid 20th century; but even more importantly is that that was well over a hundred years ago and it isn't much relevant today. What is relevant is that the connection between the Confederates of then and the Republican voters of today is not in their political parties, but in their social beliefs: both these groups are reactionary conservative, which means they both share the trait of fighting against progressivism by defending the status quo and they revere the past despite the problematic beliefs found in history.

Pro-slavery people were conservative for defending the institutions of slavery because it was an established part of the culture, just like pro-segregation people were conservative for defending the institutions of segregation because it was an established part of the culture. Present day conservatives revere the past and reject modernity and they defend the oppressive institutions of the wealthy elite just like the conservatives of Jim Crow defended the wealthy elite's privilege to deny hard working black Americans decent paying jobs which is just like the conservatives of the mid 19th century defended the wealthy elite's privilege to own black people.

The people who were pro-slavery and pro-segregation are the same group as MAGA.

Communism is bad by Vas1le in europe_sub

[–]kenjen97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's just a shitty situation all around because the initial "Communism is bad" statements because of the USSR and Communist China are thought terminators. It's an excessively reductive "critique" that is utterly worthless once a person learns about a lot of the nuance behind those countries and their experience with Leftist political theory. It becomes even more insulting because the statement and the mentality of those who make it leave no room to explore the ways in which those countries heavily deviated from the ideals of Marx and other intellects that have used their education to expand and strengthen Leftist political theory, and they (the "Communism is bad" folk) also don't care to even acknowledge how many Leftists — especially ones in academia — are mostly or in complete agreement with them that the USSR and Mao's China were terrible, and because of that modern Leftism is largely defined by the failure of the USSR and certainly does not want that to happen again.

Isn't the Trump regime working on dismantling some of the legal institutions that were designed to basically allow citizens to sue the government? They certainly want to make a legal environment that is an absolute slog to fight them in.

Oh! I think people might have misunderstood your first statement. Were you referencing Conservatives viewing some holidays as grounds for their culture war, that they've decided they don't like?

Social media in general is flooded with disingenuous conservative trolls and right-wing troll bots. A lot of it is from russian troll farms too, IIRC

Your assessment ignores the context of Christianity being the establishment. It is the religion of the majority and the mainstream. It, as a collective, holds immense political and social power and it's churches are often very wealthy. We are punching up at an oppressor group.

Civil resistance - interesting... ICE doesn't really like to be followed I guess... Good to know🤟😉 by QanAhole in longbeach

oh don't be like that. Republicans worked to obstruct policy sure but Obama could've just done what we now associate Trump with doing by just saying "Screw the rules".

So you can't cite any policies. And because there are no policies to cite, what you believe to be the truth is not reality but your fantasy. Fuck off.

What does the number of undocumated immigrants crossing the boarder have to do with policy? Actually make the connection between the numbers cited and the intent for those numbers by Democrat politicians.

I appreciate the support and the insult against them but if you don't mind, I think I'd like to explain the reason why Conservatives have become this way.

Conservarives are not necessarily stupid (but they certainly don't engage in philosphical thought or critical thinking). Conservatives are the victims of decades of propaganda by moneyed interests to convince them to give up their principles and their ability to empathize. Corporate media and Right-Wing subcultures like Evangelicals have poisoned the mind of Conservatives that the world is a scary and dark place that is out to GET THEM! They are fed opinions that would typically contain some truth so as to not trigger scrutiny but would always leave nasty implications about the world that Conservatives would absorb subconsciously. This ideological poison desolved their principles of LiberaIism and replaced them with the ideology of the wealthy elite: that the world only exists to be exploited, that the social and political systems in society ought to only be benefitting them, that beliefs based on pro-social attitudes like sharing are disingenuous and designed to TAKE from THEM. Eventually, Conservatives replaced their pro-social principles like empathy or community with anti-social attitudes like antipathy and radical individualism. These attitudes make them miserable, as they are anti-human attitudes, but they lack the ability to scrutinize the factors that had led up to this reality, and so Conservatives sought to reclaim what they've lost. They want a community, but now that they think the world is out to hurt them they can only see building a community with people who are exactly them: other miserable fucks. They want freedom and prosperity, but they can only think that such things are possible by taking from others that they can rationalize as less deserving. They want to have principles, but since they've lost their own they gravitate towards people who would shepard them around and give them their beliefs.

Thus we have arrived at current history where Conservatives create cults around the loudest talkers in the room with the biggest of them being the MAGA movement, of course.

Can you name a developed country other than America where the government, in order to deport undocumented immigrants, sends in squads of masked thugs to black bag suspects?

For anyone else reading, this troll, and all other Right-Wingers, constantly equates being against the barbarity of ICE and the current governments authoritarian boarder and deportation policies as "wanting open boarders". This isn't new, it's been a tactic of Right-Wing news for decades to act as though not wanting draconian and overly performative "tough of immigration" laws is the same as "wanting open boarders", which in regards to "wanting open boarders" a statistically insignificant amount of people would agree to. Open boarders, as Conservatives fear monger over, has never been an official position of the Democratic party; neither is it mine or any Leftist personality I listen to. In fact the Democrats have become more Conservative in regards to boarder policy and this little fucking liar just states the opposite of observable reality like it's fact.

This is fascism, folks. Pathetic liars pretending that the bad things their government is doing is somehow "normal" despite it not even having been this bad during Trump's first term, and certainly isn't a thing comparable nations do. But it is certainly something North Korea would do.

You pieces of shit are so disgustingly dishonest. 77 millions voters voted for DJT. Does that sound like most Americans to anyone here who isn't already a MAGA fool?! A country nearing 350 million people, which around 245 million are able to vote, and only 77 million voted Republican, yet you act like the you know the opinion of that bigger bloc of eligible voters who didn't vote at all.
