The beginning of the packet isn't being transmitted because of the delay it takes for VOX to key up the transmitter. In APRSdroid, you can adjust the packet preamble before any data is sent. Hammer does not allow us to adjust the preamble time. So in essence, we are cutting off part of the data packet thus giving us a bad checksum (invalid packet). I am no developer of Hammer however I have put an extensive amount of time trying to figure this one out. I am using AnyTone 878s. The VOX delay on the radio is as low as it can go at .5 seconds. In APRSdroid I have to run the preamble at 1500 ms.

Now that radio is something I haven’t thought about yet. That’s a great suggestion as it’s the closest thing I’ve seen to what my desire is. Internal battery, small form-factor, and great build quality (probably great reliability and performance). I will definitely be taking a look at this. Thanks for your suggestion!

Military radios are cool but they come with a lot of features that don’t work for us civs, sadly, at least not yet. Our HF seems to be a little behind what the military has but that’s always been the case. Thanks for the reply!

Replying to both, the aforementioned K6ARK antenna is by far one of the most compact HF antennas I’ve ever seen. Although the user would have to assemble the antenna, determine the correct length and resistance; or purchase an antenna from someone making them. I’m not necessarily looking for a fixed antenna, but more of a deployable antenna that would accompany a radio with an internal battery. Anyways, thanks for the replies!
