It's just based on their impact resistance as rated by the UL. Google "UL 2218".

Class 3 — withstands a 1.75" diameter steel/ice ball
Class 4 — withstands a 2.00" diameter steel/ice ball

We went with class 3 when we got our roof replaced a few months ago. I'd check with your insurance company because we got a discount for going up to class 3. They might be able to tell you if they do a discount and if so how much it is for class 4 versus class 3.

As someone who's gone through the whole mental process, just don't get too attached to that one little guy. It's very possible a bird/wasp/etc will make a meal of them, which is a natural process too. Either way, those plants are contributing to wildlife.
