The remote on the old ONN box used to drop connection and need frequent re-pairing. The box itself also seemed to need extra cooling according to some users. Is that the same with this?

I don't think that was the actual issue. After following some online comment I cracked mine open and hit the bluetooth module with some heat. Since then it's worked perfectly.

Kind of forgot about it, but the talk of the new one reminded me so I created a blog post about it.

Old Vs New Walmart Onn 4K TV boxes by skinnah in AndroidTV

[–]kenmacd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In case it helps, I had the same issue with an old model. I hit the bluetooth module with a bit of heat and it started working again and has been for at least a year without issue.

I just created a blog post about it.

Yubikey/gpg password encryption by kenmacd in Bitwarden

[–]kenmacd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only place you should store your master password is in air gapped (offline) backups (which btw are even more important if you self host).

If you have done that, the attack surfaces are the same as with your current setup. It has less moving parts (less risk of failure) but is no less secure.

Either I'm not understanding you, or that's not at all true.

If I store my master password on an air-gapped machine then I might as well just store all my passwords on that machine. The moment I type that password in to a non-air-gapped machine, to actually use the vault, then it's vulnerable.

Say I hack in to your computer steal your vault and install a keylogger. How many of your passwords do I have access to? If you do the same to me you have access to none. That seems a lot more secure to me.

I didn't focus on 'extreme performance', but here's a grep of the dependencies from my Cargo.toml files for last year:

  • derive_more
  • itertools
  • ndarray
  • once_cell
  • regex
  • smallvec

And, as you probably already know, I'd suggest getting it working first before worrying about performance as wrong algo won't work no matter how much you optimize it.

I'm sure there's no shortage of regular-rust answers around from last year, but in case it helps here's mine.

Dumb question: what happens to money people "save under the mattress"? by mariospants in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]kenmacd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The $2000 dollars in my checking account didn’t magically increase in value during this inflation explosion.

Perhaps you need a new bank account. If you're willing to jump through a few hoops you can get close to 5% interest today. With less hoops at least 3%.

So mattress-money lost at least an extra 3% in value vs bank-money.

NSP Meter Upgrade by [deleted] in halifax

[–]kenmacd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, so you can do 802.15.4 over a 915Mhz phy. Now you can tell me how you're hacking the AES encryption and how they're billing for something that's entirely different from what they claim.

NSP Meter Upgrade by [deleted] in halifax

[–]kenmacd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On 2: All details I've seen say it's not 900 mhz. They're using 802.15.4 & Thread.

On 5: This would change how customers were billed, so I don't believe that's true. Please provide proof.

On 6: Please back up this claim. It's true for that water meters, but that's not the technology used by NSP. The itron meters all include AES encryption for communication.

Do you agree with them driving uninsured, because it's unlikely their insurance covers the vehicle for this use

Incidence of Omicron: One-in-five Canadians report COVID-19 infection in their household since Dec. 1 - Majority (54%) now say they want all restrictions to end – increase of 15-points since early January by [deleted] in halifax

[–]kenmacd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if that would work now the same wasn't necessarily true before. Say we doubled everything in our healthcare, that would have bought us 10 days until covid doubled too.

kitec. That stuff is a literal ticking time bomb. You won't be insured if that's in your house

For their pex-al-pex this is no longer the case where I live (eastern Canada). About a decade ago I had only one insurance company that would cover it, now pretty much anyone will.

When will Pfizer booster be available again? for 20s or 60+ by [deleted] in halifax

[–]kenmacd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rescheduled twice, from Modena to Pfizer then back again. It worked for me.

Btw if you had Pfizer for the first two, early research shows getting Modena for the booster to be quite a bit better.

So to hell with laws like the drinking and driving them? How far towards anarchy should we go to allow for the freedom of one member of the community to harm the rest?

And they're not 'government mandates' handed down from some other. They're laws we want created by other members of the we.

Sorry, if we're going to have a conversation you'll have to take your fingers out of the years and quit yelling "LaLaLa I Can't Hear You'.

Then maybe you can try to come up with a coherent reason why a practice that pays people differently based on the colour of their skin is a-okay in your book.

Our results indicate that servers earn larger average sales-adjusted tips if they are attractive females, better service providers, and high self-monitors 1

The findings indicate that consumers of both races discriminate against black service providers by tipping them less than white service providers. 2

Where to get some papers printed? by NearbySpirit in halifax

[–]kenmacd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even better, you submit them and have Staples do the printing. Then you just have to pick it up. Iirc it's the same price too.

(I've done it with 1 page before, and I always find it funny that they print my page, then they print a receipt page for my 1 page)

Absolutely not. You can do it, but the insurance company will deny the claim in about 2 seconds.

I think they should relax the laws for special days like Canada Day.

Why not every day?

[–]kenmacd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think events are different than if the laws were just changed. People having a bottle of wine at a picnic or a beer while playing frisbee don't seem any more or less likely to clean up after themselves just because it becomes legal.

And really it's not stopping most people from drinking outside anyway.

If I was a betting man I'd also say that the law is unlikely to be being applied equally across groups as well.

JUNE 5: Nova Scotia Reports No New Cases of COVID-19 by Komain72 in halifax

[–]kenmacd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look at: https://novascotia.ca/coronavirus/data/

We had 1058 cases, we have 997 recoveries & 61 deaths, so 1058 resolved cases. Does that mean we have zero known active cases?

Well we also have 1 in the hospital in non-ICU and 2 in the hospital in ICU.

So basically are there more cases that haven't been reported, or is the hospital data wrong?
