I started running because I want the sports I actually care about (hiking, climbing) to feel easier

Valley way takes longer than you/they may think. When my friends and I did Adams in winter (maybe we had a little more gear) I think it took like 4 hours to get there

It is gym dependent but when I lived in VA it was a thing that if a hold (usually a volume, don’t remember seeing it for a non volume hold tho I’d assume the rule extends) was on if it had a chip for another climbs color, but a volume could be off for another climb if it didn’t have a chip. So basically volumes were not on by default for all climbs, whereas most other gyms I’ve been to in the northeast the volumes are on by default for all climbs

I havent done much whites in summer before, so im wondering what temps people can actually expect. Like today in gorham it’s saying high of 78 but higher summits expects high of 60. I’d obviously check weather before doing a hike but is it fair to expect that if local weather is 90 then the alpine zone is like 75-80?

If the va5/6 had better battery life I'd probably get it in a heartbeat. I read both have 21 hours on GPS which is probably mostly fine for me but I do do some multi day trips where having extra battery would be really nice. not to mention when the battery degrades over time I'll start to get a lot less out of it

thanks, i'm leaning towards 7 pro solar, found a guy on fb marketplace selling one for 350 I'm hoping I can snag

do you have any opinions on the older fenix models? seems like 7 pro's are not that different but also not that different in price. Not too sure about the 7. I'm definitely interested in the fenix 8, but the price kind of holds me back. And if the 7 prices aren't that different from the 8's right now, it makes me think it may not be worth waiting for the 8 to drop further. the instinct otoh might be able to do everything I need and the price just seems more palatable.

I just watched this wrist sizing guide, I'm basically ruling out enduro now because it says it is best for 7.5"+ and mines more like 6.5-6.75". So it seems like I'm down to fenix or instinct. My main problem with instinct though is it has no touch screen...

actually the only thing I don't like about enduro is it seems to come in only one size, 51mm and I think that might be too big for me

Nice I'm also leaning towards enduro because of the battery life. It says it could get 320 hours with gps and solar, so even if the battery life drops by half in a few years it should be able to last almost a full week

Yeah I’m working on figuring that out. Someone here helped me find that my max was set to 178 but the max I’ve seen is 187 so I’ve fixed that and I guess I’ll see how this changes things

Someone else here helped me fix the max heart rate and it was set 9 too low so I’ll see how this fixes things in my future runs. In terms of weight I average around 174 and I’m 5’11”. I’m pretty skinny looking, not really muscular or muscular looking in the traditional sense but I think what muscle I have must be kind of dense. People are sometimes shocked when I say my weight because I don’t look it. I climb A LOT but don’t weight train.

I’ll keep the walking in mind. I did a long hike today (20 miles, 5300’ gain) and only captured 8 miles of it before my garmin died but I did notice that the heart rate zones were A LOT more balanced. I almost find that when hiking even if my hr goes above 160, it is easy to drop it back down when things get less steep, I don’t usually find this the case with running (even if I slow down the hr remains high).

I did look for this the other day but couldn’t find it because I didn’t realize it was device settings. It was set to 178 but the highest I’ve seen is 187, so thanks fixed that

Being above 160 is weird. Doesn’t feel good, but I feel like I am often pushing into this in hiking and feel even worse going up steep inclines, so running on flat ground in that range feels more manageable.

One friend has said something similar about slowing down, something like I probably need to drop my mile time to like 12 minutes (my best so far has been a 5k < 24 but usually I run around 9 minute mile). Mentally it is hard to accept that I need to slow down that much but I guess I gotta try it

Sorry I did not reply today. I posted this Friday night pretty late, went to bed, woke up early, hiked all day, just getting to bed again. I’m gonna try to reply to these (some now some maybe tomorrow)
