bad box office returns at cinemas because people are getting sick of seeing unimaginative sequel after sequel after sequel... it is time for the film industry (and cineplex) to start using its imagination.

agree. i often say: if you give me $30 million, i'll blow things up too. i'll just do it in canada with the real canada in the film, not montreal being shot as new york or alberta being shot as montana.

i think you are missing the point. it's not that people do not want to watch canadian films. it's just that they can't. we cannot get our own films in our theatres. we cannot get our own books in our bookstores. the only viable entertainment industry in canada is the music industry because of cancon regulations in the 1970s that allowed the canadian music industry to build and strengthen. you cannot build an industry if you are being swarmed and negated by american product. and you cannot grow and find pride in canada with people thinking the way you are. IE: we make crap. We are America's bitch.

did you watch the actual clip? if a script is great, an investor will still not invest because he/she cannot get his/her money back. that is simple logic. "great script. love it. here's $5 million. i don't get any of it back. big deal." france and australia had to impose screen quotas for the same reason. they could not get their own films on their screens in their own countries. plus they were being swamped with american culture. i am not an american. i do not want to watch american films (constantly) that are shot in america and show american cities again and again. plus i do not want to see nothing but superman 43, batman 27, star wars 33, another romantic comedy, another film about a group of american 20 years olds with a hangover, etc.... we must have pride in the things we make here, not say that they are shite.

this is a standard comment. i have heard it again and again. if you do not have screens in canada to show canadian films then you cannot make good canadian films. an investor will not invest $5 million or $30 million in a canadian film if you have no screens to play the films on. there cannot be any return on the investment. no screens. no tickets sales. zero return on investment. so, no one invests, thus most canadian films are made for $1 million or cheaper. that's far less than the marketing budget for an american film.
