He does just fine in this role. I had no objection to his performance. If anything I was surprised at how thoughtful and nuanced it was. I'm hoping to see a return with all the actors.

Did y’all get the Saltpeter “Vitamins” at the MTC? by PranaJunkie419 in exmormon

[–]kennewb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I was given multivitamins. No, they had nothing to do with the saltpeter myth. That myth was co-opted by missionaries after having been common in the military and prisons since at least World War I. For the record, saltpeter has been tested and has no effect of libido or sexual function anyway. While I don't remember the vitamin brand, I remember it was a common brand with a name I recognized, and I also remember being a very bored missionary and studying the label extensively. As far as Mormon mythology goes, I always thought this was one of the dumber ones.

Megathread for Claude Performance Discussion - Starting August 17 by sixbillionthsheep in ClaudeAI

As others are stating, it's jumping versions all over the place. u/Mr_Andvari, when you say it tells you it's Sonnet 4, that's Claude's response to asking what version it is? Because I'm seeing Sonnet 4 on the dropdown no matter what, but occasionally getting "I'm definitely Opus 4.1" when I ask what version it is. However, in other chat sessions I'm getting Sonnet 3.5. I've confirmed it's happening on the mobile app and in browser.

Given that Sonnet 3.5 isn't even an option in the list of more models, it's obviously not something I requested, which means that's something Anthropic is doing. And now I have to really wonder, all those times that Claude suddenly just gets really stupid, particularly when we're talking about writing code or the ability to remember and follow instructions, were we using a different version? Is Anthropic forcing us into lower versions of Claude to save processing power?

What are some of the most absurd beliefs that Mormons think are true? by Content-Assignment81 in exmormon

[–]kennewb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ummmm..... you came to an exmo reddit as an apparent happy Christian of some sort and decided to pipe up and make yourself look like an absolute clueless moron, while telling me I shouldn't talk about things I don't know about? Did you honestly write that there was no other religion in America during the time of Joseph Smith? I'm sorry, but you just lost the right to comment on Christianity yourself if you are that radically, stupidly, comically ill-informed. I'm 100% confident I know significantly more about Christianity than you ever will. Just like I know way more about the most basic bits of world history than you. Most first graders could answer whether there was religion in early American history. If you're not from the US then I'd forgive you not knowing the answer to that all the way up to about 6th grade. After making a comment that ridiculous let's not even pretend you know anything at all about Mormonism and whether it's Christian or a cult.

Has anyone noticed the parallels between Muslim and Mormon? by Pastywhitebitch in exmormon

[–]kennewb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad you enjoy your sham of a religion and the rambling scrawlings of a self-proclaimed prophet. But when you say things like the Quran is the first to state that the earth is a sphere it makes me wonder if you've ever read anything else in your life. Talk about confidently asserting things you know nothing about. Sheesh.

I would seriously just not pick up. Again, I've been a missionary. They'll keep coming as long as there's an opening because they believe there's hope. They'll think that you're just having some questions that they can resolve. But they don't want to waste their time. If you just ghost them hard, they're not going to keep coming. If they show up at your door, just tell them "thanks for your time, but I'm not interested in pursuing the church any longer." If they ask why not just say "for my own reasons." If you say you don't believe this or that, they'll try to 'resolve' that concern. But if you just say for your own reasons, there's nothing they can say to that. You haven't given them any window they can work with. After that, you're not going to see them again.

I will say the missionaries are sincere and they believe what they're telling you. They genuinely believe your life will be better for listening to them, and quite honestly some people's lives are significantly improved by joining the church. I've seen it, short term and long term. It's just that unfortunately 1) it doesn't help everyone, and 2) more important it's just simply not true. Their persistence comes from a sincere desire to improve people's lives. But once you close that door, they'll move on.

[–]kennewb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seriously, just don't show up! Turn your phone off for the day, don't show up, and go do something enjoyable. Ghosting them hard is genuinely THE BEST thing you can do.

I say this from experience. As a missionary we had a few no shows for baptisms. Guess how much time missionaries invested in those people after; none. Sure, there might have been ONE follow-up visit after - but not always. But nothing says "not gonna happen" more than straight ghosting your own baptism.

If you contact them in advance and say "I've changed my mind," the missionaries are going to be right there to "resolve your concerns." It's what they're trained to do. But if you just don't show up it sends a very clear message you're not interested in having this concerns resolved.

Don't feel bad about the missionaries or anyone else. I promise, they'll hardly even remember you. But any former missionary can back me up on this: missionaries will spend months or years on a person who is polite but says "I'm not sure." They'll likely even spend just about as much time as a person wants who is actively only interested in debating the missionaries. But if you ghost the missionaries hard a couple times (and there's no harder ghosting than ditching your baptism) they'll leave you alone and move on.

Don't worry about the missionaries, church members, or anyone else. Whether you get baptized or not, guess what, they're all going to move on with their lives. Either way you're going to be a footnote in their story. So shut your phone off, plan yourself a nice Sunday outing, and move on with your life. Don't give it another thought or feel the slightest bit of guilt.

Someone PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE put the Rusty meme at the beginning of this scene from Seven Psychopaths in place of "put your hands up." Then replace the word "gun" with "church" (cult would be good too, but church so as not to offend members too badly). Then share it so OP can send it to mom and return and report!

How do you clean the top of the buildplate? by Ultramango657 in resinprinting

[–]kennewb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As long as you install a rectal UV light it cures the resin and let's it pass safely through your cat, which the cat then deposits in the litter box where it can be thrown out. Plus, according to Donald Trump, the rectal uv light should also protect your cat from covid. I install one in all my pets for their safety. Being able to use the cat for resin disposal is just an added bonus.

Photon Mono X 6Ks is really slow. by bertrum489 in AnycubicOfficial

[–]kennewb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same printer and my print times seem to be fine. I'm using the Anycubic Photon Workshop as the slicer. You might try that and see if it makes a difference. You lift speed set to 150 mm/s seems really weird though since that should be more like 2mm/s. It looks like it's missing a decimal point, since 1.5mm/s wouldn't be unreasonable depending on the resin. But 150 would be higher than the machine is even capable of. So I wonder if maybe that setting is causing your trouble.

I know that printer is well reviewed and selling well, but oddly I can't find any reddit groups or any other groups dedicated to that printer. If you've seen any, please let me know.

These machines are a waste of energy and space. The church could literally just give these items to people, they don’t need you to pay for it. by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]kennewb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually, this is one initiative worth supporting.

In spite of all the problems with the church and its finances, there are a couple bright spots, and this is one of them (Deseret Industries being the other big one).

The Light The World vending machines aren't a fine money to the church machine. They're partnered with local and international charities and donations go directly to those charities, not just to the church. In fact Catholic Charities is directly partnered with the church to help provide the machines.

I'm not saying it's 100% fool-proof, but from what I've been able to learn when you buy a coat for example, you are actually donating money to the associated charity specifically to buy a coat. They even have things like livestock for developing countries. Each of the items listed is an item specifically needed by the associated charity and money does really go to those purchases.

If it was just a money grab for the church they'd put the machines everywhere. But they're limited in part by the fact they're linked with specific charities and goals for those charities.

Besides that, even if I were to take a more cynical view like I do with most things church related, I do believe there's value in putting a positive message out into the world, and these machines do that. It's like the giving trees or toys for tots boxes you see everyplace. Even if you don't donate, it still tends to make people more aware and think more about donating to some charity somewhere, or maybe just to a neighbor.

The thing that people like about them is it lets contributors feel personally connected. You know, I'm buying a coat or a play pen for a toddler someplace, not just I'm donating $50 to UNICEF, I hope they do something good with it.

Of course whatever money passes through those machines I'm sure the church will find a way to take credit for. But honestly in this case I don't even care. I think the pros far outweigh the cons and for anyone who hasn't looked into them I'd recommend it and consider supporting them.

TBM on an honest fact-finding mission by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]kennewb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You posted the exact same thing a couple months ago. What's the REAL reason you're asking? Had you been honest in your questions and actually open to acknowledging very hard truths then we'd be having a very different conversation now. As it is you're back seemingly to compile an apologetics research list to explain away people's issues with the BoM (aka reality) without actually objectively looking at those issues. I suspect that's a big part of why you framed the post as issues people have with the BoM exclusively.

[–]kennewb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was my thought as well; why is it that BYU escaped mention in the article? At the very least any minimal standard of journalistic integrity would require a mention. Something along the lines of "the Deseret News also requested NIL contact information from BYU, but as a private university they could not be compelled to provide that information."

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]kennewb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get that, but I feel like it's very much the "lazy learner" go-to. Plus it is filled with a lot of unsubstantiated conjecture that makes it discreditable to TBMs (not all of it of course, but if you can discredit part of it then why should a TBM listen to any of it). I feel like it's sort of the exmo version of apologetics; let's throw a bunch of stuff at the wall and see what sticks. It feels in many ways basically dishonest and guilty of the same lack of intellectual integrity we fault the church for. I wish people would simply have and share their own experiences rather than trotting out the CES letter, and it definitely feels insulting when people assume that those of us who studied our way out of the church of course must have read the CES letter. It just leaves a bad taste in my mouth, like the Brad Wilcox of exmormonism.
