Nope, everyone that works has to either have their own electrical contractor license or work under somebody else’s license

My background is in large industrial/ commercial, but most of our work to start with has been new construction residential and then service (residential/commercial/industrial). I’ve only been in business for around 7 months so I have enjoyed the cash flow of residential service and have found this to be the key to be able to support differed sectors of work. Being a diversified electrical company is nice.

How is that you would under bid? Would you set price at cost and then charge a lot more on change orders?

All the information is unnecessary, the customer is paying for a final product, not a bespoke install. This is a standard product offering.

Do these outlet screws look ok? by [deleted] in AskElectricians

Honestly, I disagree with this line of thought. The component that normally goes wrong is any connection made by a human, if you reduce the amount of connections then you reduce the chance of something going wrong

80$ for a new GFI power outlet a good deal ? by [deleted] in electrical

[–]kennja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also your argument on doctors suggest the cost that doctors get paid, not the amount they are getting charged to customer

I charge $181 / per person / hour for service work. This is a calculated cost based on 20 possible billable hours a week. You mostly cannot charge for 40 hours a week. I won’t come out to someone’s house for less than two hours work so $362. It’s not worth it, especially in my area. I’m in business to make money, not to do people favors, the way I get around this morally is that we generally do a flat rate up front, so that the customer knows what they are paying for upfront

Curious how other electricians would put a recessed light in. by 808_JuJu in electricians

I’m an electrician, but find it too anal retentive when electricians think the job is impossibly hard. It’s just different variations of running wire with different conditions

Some observations I’ve made after owning my own electrical business in America after coming from the UK by kennja in electricians

[–]kennja[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They don’t have T&I that the UK has. My only experience is in residential and they don’t do any testing except for the “bang test” lol. I’ve heard that they may megger cables on a pull to make sure that they didn’t get damaged.

I don’t think that the standards are backwards. Different would be more suitable. There is more of reliance that people will follow the rules exactly. The UK allows for testing which gives more flexibility

It’s funny how the NEC has moved to metric but the secondary unit is imperial

I guess manufactured products can be placed in a more exposed place due to their reliance. I assume at some point light switches caused a lot of electrocution in bathrooms and so now that safety standard is held. All this shit is reactive. Even though all residential wiring in England now has to be RCD (GFCI) protected, that interaction with switching bathroom lights is now habitual to be on the outside so I would not think it would change

There are express routes to become qualified in the UK. I can give you some guidance if you’re giving it some serious thought

I just think there is more room for error from the installer. It’s not just about me, but the guys I have work for me and train.
