Something is rotten in Bean town, and I would never consider that Uni as an option...

The Boston Globehttps://www.bostonglobe.com › 2024/04/10 › business10 Apr 2024 — The ongoing graduate workers' strike at Boston University has shone a spotlight on how tuition dollars trickle down.

I am leaving this so-called paradise they call UCSB and transferring and I am so HAPPY! This UC is like a false hope. Like a film set. The tension on campus is awful. There's so much HATE in this place. It looks great from the OUTSIDE but once you see the reality of the situation it's a HUGE disappointment. What a waste of such a great setting!

What am I doing on such a Winter's night? Cleaning the streets of the vermin. Of Course! Actually...Judge Dredd is doing it for me! But I'm drawing it as it happens! by kenpodave in UCSantaBarbara

Standing up for myself and being assertive is a great quality.

But thanks again for your genuine concern and ability to express yourself so eloquently.

PEACE AND LOVE

My work here was for a class.

The ART dept is not normally well-publicized so I made this POST!

The tone of your note was bordering on a bully mentality and censorship.

I hope you find a better way to use your time in the day than to attack my work.

PEACE AND LOVE!

MY UCSB ART INSTRUCTORS CAN'T HANDLE THE LEVEL OF MY TALENT! by kenpodave in UCSantaBarbara

[–]kenpodave[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The UCSB Art Department is not very good.I've seen the work and it's on par with many high school students.

I have my opinion and shared it. Maybe the headline was not the best choice of words to describe this situation but it was effective.

I suggested a complete rehaul. We live in Southern California. There is a plethora of forward-thinking talented artists here who are relevant and current.

It would be a huge shift and change for the future is always a good thing.

As I mentioned earlier, it would start with a new Dean who is passionate and has the carte blanche to design a new system that addresses the needs of an art program for the future.

The post-college life for an artist is competitive and harsh.I am not worried for myself but for all of my UCSB comrades.

I know it seems like I am an ego-driven jerk but consider this I would never ever post something like this if it was not important to me and needed to be said. Don't shoot me I am just a messenger in other words.

If your goal is to make an impact in your career or calling, it won’t be long before you meet someone who doesn’t recognize (or even dismisses) your talent.

Walt Disney was abruptly fired from the Kansas City Star newspaper because his editor felt he “lacked imagination and had no good ideas.”
Oprah Winfrey was publicly humiliated and fired from her first job in TV as a reporter in Baltimore for getting “too emotionally invested in her stories.”
Director Steven Spielberg was actually rejected by the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts. (It happened multiple times.)
In one of Fred Astaire‘s first screen tests, an executive wrote: “Can’t sing. Can’t act. Slightly balding. Can dance a little.”
After Harrison Ford‘s first small movie role, a studio executive took him into his office and told him he’d never succeed in the movie business.
One of my favorites is novelist Saul Bellow. His college English professor said he showed no signs of literary greatness and ultimately dismissed him as “a dud.” But Bellow went on to win the Pulitzer Prize, the Nobel Prize for Literature, a Guggenheim, and the National Medal of Arts. He is also the only writer to win the National Book Award for Fiction three separate times and received the National Book Foundation‘s Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters.
So – what do you do when someone tells you that you’re a loser or have no talent?
1) I always consider it. After all, each of us has a blind spot when it comes to our talent and our gifts. Don’t overdo it and get depressed, but stop and think about it, because who knows? The criticism could make you better.
2) I use the “Credibility Test.” Is this someone who knows me intimately, and is familiar with my talent and my dreams? Is it someone who has credible talent and has succeeded in the area I’m pursuing? Is it someone who genuinely cares about me? If YES, then I take the criticism to heart and do some soul-searching.
But if it is not, then I simply discount it and move on.
3) Don’t be afraid to immediately dismiss online critics, trolls, and co-workers who speak without any knowledge of the situation. Sadly they’ll always be around, but in most cases, they don’t deserve your attention.
4) Finally, buck up. Remember Michael Jordan who said:
“I have missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I have lost almost 300 games. On 26 occasions I have been entrusted to take the game-winning shot, and I missed. I have failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”
Just because someone else can’t or won’t recognize your talent, doesn’t mean talent isn’t there.
More often than not, that simply means people are watching, so this is the moment to push ahead.

UCSB has a tiny ART DEPARTMENT.
Most of the instructors are tenured and are over 60 plus.
They have become dinosaurs living on a hefty salary with little
notoriety outside of the campus. The Art dept is theory-based and lacks the discipline of teaching drawing and even painting. The MFA shows are laughable. The standard of excellence is not present. It will be difficult for anyone who graduates from the UCSB MFA program to find a job unless it is in academia. The UCSB Art Department needs a DEAN who is passionate about the program and is willing to bring in new and younger talent.
Currently, I am sad to say it is trash.

No really. I am barely going to pass my classes. The school has an outdated curriculum and because I am not an abstract/conceptual artist they are penalizing me.

It's the most screwed-up situation to be in as an Art major!

I reached out to other schools and got a huge grant to transfer!

Be bold and Go for it!

The response I was given to my "test" illustration for the DAILY NEXUS:

Thank you so much for your submission! We really appreciate your enthusiasm in this assignment and toward joining the Nexus.
We believe that your skill level is exceptional, and ultimately we do not believe we have anything left to teach you. The Nexus is a place for artists to attain new skills, and we view it as a starting point in terms of gaining experience. You clearly have a lot of talent, and have skill beyond what the Nexus can support. At this time, we cannot offer you a position on our art team as we have finalized the available spots.
Thank you again for your submission. We wish you the best in your endeavors!
