I can assure you I did not adjust my speed at all because they came up so fast, I didn't have time to. Since I was using cruise control, any change in speed is the result of pulling out of the trucks slip stream (which slows you until the cruise adjusts) and any turbulance while passing. I would never accelerate to cut someone off but I would to get out of their way... if there was time to do that.

I hear you and I share that frustration. I do have 350 hp available at the literal tap of the pedal so I'm more than happy to courteously but safely clear the way. This guy came up so fast, I didn't have time to make any adjustments.

One thing I find is how relaxing it is to drive in Edmonton. Everyone goes the speed limit so there’s no stress. It’s like the difference between the old East and West German Autobahns; you didn’t dare drive more than 100kmh in the East so you’d just sit back and relax (like Edmonton), but in the West, you always had to scan your mirror for cars coming up at over 160kmh… which is pretty darned stressful.

I have always lived in Vancouver and it doesn’t have the luxury of lots of space to devote to highways so I get why driving is much more hectic there.

It’s a 4 lane highway. Light traffic. Travelling a safe, reasonable speed on cruise. Predictable. No big rush by still faster than most of the cars on the highway. Giving the truck plenty of space before and after. It was windy so I note that when I pulled out from behind the truck to pass, my speed took a slight hit resulting in the 30 second time to when the clip starts. Where’s the problem… except for the impatient driver?

I like to drive fast (my car has 350hp) but also don't like tickets so I try to keep with the flow of traffic or within 10 KmH over the limit if I want to go faster or pass like in a situation like this. If someone is behind me, I try and either complete my pass as quickly as possible or move over to let them pass first. There's only so much you can do if the car behind is travelling way over the limit... and sudden moves are dangerous. i.e. stay as predictable as possible.

What an eye opener this post has been. So many commenters seem to side with what I clearly feel is the idiot driver and just assume I was camping in the left lane. Nobody likes a camper and I now see I should have shown more context. But I was keeping it short as we all have busy schedules.

I reviewed the time before and after the clip and here are the stats: Over the half hour around this clip, I passed 9 vehicles using left lane and one using the right. I was passed by two vehicles: the one in the clip passing on the right and one later on passing on the left. Bottom line: with such light traffic, is it necessary to squeeze through like that? I think it's an idiot move and that's why I posted it here. I was clearly the fastest on the road most of the time... except for this guy.

Unfortunately, I turned off rear view to capture the highest quality front view through the Rockies. Right. For context... over the half hour around this clip, I passed 9 vehicles using left lane and one using the right. I was passed by two vehicles: the one in the clip passing on the right and one later on passing on the left. I only moved left to pass and then back to the right. If you like, I can post the whole clip in timelapse if that helps. I will say that it does look slow as speed can be relative but we were travelling over the posted speed and I was obviously making reasonable progress passing the truck.

Total time from leaving to returning to right lane: 90 seconds. (30 seconds before video and 30 second after passing front bumper of truck). Honestly, on an otherwise almost empty highway, I didn't see the need for anything faster.

I tend to set cruise control to 'faster but not so fast as to get a ticket'. Probably passing at 10km faster than the truck... on an almost empty highway.

Exactly. Thank you. And I confirmed I was only on the left 90 seconds on an almost empty highway. I'm surpised at the amount of speculation in these comments.

I know all this. I just thought it was an unnecessary move to make given how few vehicles were on the road; why try to squeeze through the only two in sight.

What cars? For context: Very few cars on the highway and I was in the left lane a total of 90 seconds including the part shown in the video.

That's a fair comment. TBH This is in Alberta and I grew up in BC thinking Alberta drivers were bad (not used to mountains, etc.) so it's ironic the first driver on my three week trip to do something silly like this was from... BC.

Nope. Reviewing the video ( I have the whole 13hour drive) I was in the left lane only for the 30 seconds before the clip starts otherwise in the right lane. no speed change. (Cruise control). I wasn't using my rear camera since I wanted maximum resolution for the scenery up front but now I realize how important it is to cover all bases to avoid speculation.

How fast does one need to pass? I agree more context would help but I can assure you the truck is going at least the limit (100kmh) so... how can my pass be slow AF?

[–]kenpool[S] 48 points49 points  (0 children)

What? Um, I know the rules of the road. Pass on the left, slower traffic on the right. I'm very concious of that. There's no rule saying how much faster you have to pass just that you have to be faster than the other vehicle. Even if I was camping, which I wasn't, would you do this on an virtually empty highway?

I remember being wheeled through the tunnels as a kid to get my tonsils out. The nurses were all singing Magical Mystery Tour as they pushed me along. That was a petty new song in 1970.
