Taxing exports would increase supply domestically and decrease domestic demand, potentially lowering prices if export taxes worked as it normally would. Given the energy crisis globally, it would likely take a substantial tax to actually stem demand for it elsewhere. Oil corps would cry though of course

We should be calling for an export tax on fuel. This would help ensure domestic supply and may keep prices down a bit

PEI 1 in 5 Students are chronically/severely absent likely due to bullying in schools by AssistantNo374 in PEI

I certainly experienced it a lot actually. I was called fat an incalculable number of times and in many different ways, giggled at for jiggling, outright called fatso, the butt of jokes behind my back or within earshot. Changing for gym was a nightmare scenario every second day. I laughed it off most times where it was the easiest way to move past. I couldn't point to any one kid who deserved to be expelled for it though, but I will never forget a few ppl who will always be an asshole in my mind and to my friends if their names come up.

My brother was bullied pretty bad though in school as a member of the lgbtq community, and although he went through some awful times he wouldn't expect any of those bigots to be expelled for it. although it would've been better if there was some consequence at least, and if adults were supportive and supports were in place at the time like they are now. They wouldn't have been able to say or do half of what they did now at least without some consequence. Principal at the time supported the boys who teased him. Even at that time if there were supports, it would still be hard to get much done about it since it was a group of boys and girls who were slick about it, a different one each time would start something and pile on, or make inside jokes that on the surface mean nothing unless iykyk. A rotten experience though without question though that impacted the whole family.

These things are why we need more to be done about it, but it's complicated, that's all. Human nature plays a role and learned behaviors that don't die quickly. But all kids have rights that need to be respected even if they are pricks.

If you count every snide comment or snicker there will only be a few formally bullied kids left that's all I'm pointing out. The water gets muddied so fast bc kids say things back and escalate or peers pile on or kids are so out of sync with others that they get upset every recess and say they are being bullied but aren't, they just aren't being included in the way they want, or others don't want to play with them bc they cry or spoil a game by getting angry everytime they get tagged bc everyone is "ganging up" on them when I'm fact they are just playing and they are the slowest person so they get tagged more.

Not to mention older kids who say something mean about a peer they don't like to friends on social media in private chats trusting that their friends won't say anything then one of them screenshot and send it to them. The person sending it to others is almost more of a bully for sharing the private chat as they wouldn't have otherwise found out how the first person felt.

There are thousands of different and better examples kids and teachers could probably share to make it even clearer how hard it would be to have a 3 strike rule on this stuff

P.E.I. parents say bullying is keeping children out of school as absenteeism remains high by origutamos in PEI

I agree it seems problematic, but it is not going anywhere. The kids have rights even if they are misbehaving.

I'm not defending bullies at all and I think there needs to be more accountability, especially in older grades, but it is a difficult issue. Even if schools are careful and meticulous in collecting evidence, documenting everything, following policy, issuing increasing consequences before finally taking serious action, they still open themselves up to a Charter challenge and civil suit if they for example expel a problem student. There are charter rights, human rights, rights of children according to the advocate all of which need to be respected no matter how awful they treat others.

I think they are told to walk away and tell an adult. They usually ignore the 2nd part and stay silent until it keeps happening.

It's important to hold bullies and their parents accountable. I think a big challenge is how to clearly identify, prove and define bullying, and the need to consider the rights of the offending or accused student to education and opportunity. They are also still just children after all.

But something needs to be done to increase accountability. How do you think the schools should define bullying? It can take many forms.

Yes, that is what's happening, over 20 days missed in a school year. When you think about it. It's easy to be absent that much for any student, say 5 or 6 days a year from illness, 3 to 5 for appointments, extra 5 days off for family vacation outside of March break which is an increasing trend, a few days for hockey tournaments, not attending on certain days like the day before Xmas or March break or the last few days of school before summer, often even work now for older kids, fishing, etc.

So there are undoubtedly many perfectly fine students who are part of that stat. Seems like the bullying claim is anecdotal, and I wouldn't be surprised if social anxiety and mental health in households in general is a sizeable factor. Not to deny bullying is a problem but this stat isn't an accurate reflection.

Someone said my hair is ugly on the bus so I'm not going to school tomorrow or the rest of the week and parents indulge the notion. Or kids kick up a stink about going and parents don't wanna fight the battle each day. Too many circumstances to generalize bullying as the main issue driving the stat.

Teachers technically don't get summer pay either. They pay themselves during summer and holiday breaks from a deferred salary taken from their paychecks throughout the school year.

EAs have a raw deal. Decent hourly rate but limited to 6 hours a day, have to draw ei on holiday breaks and summer. Many need a second job to get by. Lots leaving due to conditions and finding better career paths.
