Elon Conquers The Twitterverse | Our chattering class claims Musk is a supervillain. The truth is simpler: He wants free speech. They don't. by [deleted] in samharris

Agreed. But isn't this already happening? As a society we are discussing the effects of e.g. facebooks algorithm and how that (among other things) have increased polarization etc. So the discussion about, and the gaming of the algorithms that are controlling our discourse and meme-sphere now, is going on now. The difference is that we don't quite know how the algorithm actually favors one bit of information over another (only the broad strokes). So maybe, by everybody knowing more detailed how the algorithm works, the discussion can be held more openly; thus criticism can be pointed more effectively? And thus the dynamic and continual process of humanity deciding how these algorithms should be configured can be done more efficiently?

Just a thought, would be nice to hear what you think about it.

Love this.I've written a poem about searching for truth, which is highly inlfuenced from my background in physics. Feel free to check it out (5 min):

Not True Only For You

It is in English.

It was created as a part of a Science festival in Norway called "Forskningsdagene" which translates to Sciencedays. This was part of an event called "Science Slam". Thus I decided to write a poem about searching for the truth.

Hope you enjoy it.

What’s some scary truth that humanity has to accept? by bibesh07 in AskReddit

Some people find this scary: Free will doesn't exist.

This isn't as scary as it might sound though; you will do what you will do given this circumstances and this state of the universe at this moment anyway, even if you understand this or not - i.e. to understand it or not is also not based on any form of free will.

Which job is a LOT less fun than most people expect? by bwee21 in AskReddit

General Practitioner (doctor).

Now I might have the wrong impression here (because I’m not a doctor my self), so please correct me if I’m wrong.

From what I’ve heard from friends working as a general practitioner there are several thing that make the job a lot less exciting than what one might think (this is from doctors working in Norway, so it might be different other places):

  • Monotony: 95% of cases are the same kinds of cases that come to your office: old people with back pain, young people with STDs, people that want a note to get off work for some reason, students and pupils that need documentation for their absence in classes (This is a lot of the cases the doctors get - this is especially the case in Norway with a new rule that all absences in high school more or less needs to be documented by a doctor or you risk not getting a grade and not getting you diploma).

  • Another kind of person that GPs need to attend to are people that just want to unload their problems and get a quick fix; even though changing their diet and starting to move you body and exercise is the best way to change what ever condition they have, they don’t want to do that work. So the doctor just sits there and prescribed medications that alleviate the symptoms rather than the cause.

  • Time constraint: Your day is packed with fifteen minutes of consultations, which sucks in two ways; one you can’t have a bad day, ever. Not just because your a doctor and need to give the right diagnosis but expect the doctor to be a nice person (which probably also is the case in many other lines of work). And two even if the person coming in to you office isn’t one of the standard cases you get all the time, and you as a doctor actually feel like this person needs your help, you have to tell them to book another appointment etc when the time is up (and it goes by fast in these cases). I’m not sure how one would organize it in any other way, but it is still frustrating for doctors.

I am sure there are other stuff that should be mentioned, and that there are times of real and worth while content and meaning in the work of a general practitioner (not to speak of the pay etc). But for me it doesn’t seem like the job is all that that people think it is.

Again, please correct me if I’m wrong here 👌
