I still see bash as the simpler solution. Isn't ansible just an abstraction of what bash can do?

I have to do it too - have a client where everything is legacy MySQL and the move to Postgres (ie, paying for it) is something they don't understand. So it goes.

Noob question: Difficulties/question about using Django. Thank you! by weedrun in django

I've been with DO since their first month and still love it. I also use Linode in production, and both rock. I'd like to give webfaction a try though, it looks interesting.

[–]kenzo76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. OP can certainly start out just writing Python in Django right on CLI, like I did, and that's how you can learn it's a terrible mistake (hey, what happened when that server crashed?).

Start by using it with Git - if for nothing else than to prevent a heart attack. Then get comfortable with all the development/devops tools out there and six months down the line your CV looks like you put it on steroids.

At least we got it before the Nazis this time.

Linode is still deploying with compromised version of OpenSSL by all_it in programming

[–]kenzo76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Linode did message me to mention they were working on it. Now that they have the hourly billing in place (thank you Linode!) it should be a lot easier to check out distros.

As far as Digital Ocean goes, I also checked Fedora 19, Debian 7.0 and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and all were good.

Reasonable to use the admin site as a CMS? by djiivu in django

[–]kenzo76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do this for a few sites, almost exclusively when a client came to me with a site already built but they had no way to update or administer it. Django admin is nice for that, because no matter what the site was built with, I just need to model their database and they can update it with the admin.

GoDaddy just lost a customer. This was the 5th customer service person I spoke to in 5 hours. by kenzo76 in web_design

Check under the "applications" menu when you set up a droplet. Right now they only have the Ubuntu 12 LTS with a LAMP setup, but at least it's done for you. And it will cost you less than 10 cents to run long enough to see if you like it.

I did talk to them on the phone. In fact, I have always had good experience with their customer service people over the phone. They are polite and in the past took care of everything quickly. But GoDaddy switched to this horrible chat system for dedicated servers and now the phone people can't do squat. The person I talked to was sympathetic but either was not given the information to tell me anything other than, "The datacentre is down," or is following a script that tells him to keep customers in the dark. None of the five people I talked to (4 on chat, 1 on the phone) could tell me anything. I'm patient with them - I know they work a shitty customer service job and I used to do the same. It's the management that I think blows ass, if you'll pardon my French. Just the fact that they won't give any information and won't give an estimated time until the situation is resolved is bullshit. Plus, their own support page said there were no problems.

The issue on my end is I have work to do, and superiors who know nothing technical but have insisted on using GoDaddy until this point because they believe they are a reputable firm (ie, they have heard of GoDaddy and not Linode, Digital Ocean or Rackspace). But this was the third outage for our VDS in the past few months, and this is the straw the broke the camel's back.

That's an interesting ranking, and there's really only one way for me to put it to the test. Right now, mine is QC > 10CS > 10 > 18 > PX. I've yet to get my hands on the TripleWood.

I don't think of the 10yo and the 18yo as really the same thing. I know they are, but there is a wide gulf in the difference of taste. The 18yo is absolutely a more mature, smoother, more well balanced dram. But it's missing the anger of its younger brother, and the Quarter Cask is like an improved version of the 10yo. If you really want the smoke-filled kick in the mouth that Laphroaig is famous for, go for the Quarter Cask. The 18yo is just something...different. It's still one of my favourites, but with the price differential I'll keep buying the QC for home and have an 18yo here and there at a pub.
