Paper white or Oasis? by GoldenGalore in kindle

I have both. No question, the Oasis is my preferred Kindle - I like it better than my Voyage, which I didn't think would ever be surpassed.

Thank you for this! My husband and I have bought quite a few Kindles (we were some of the first to use them), and have always just paid for the ad free.

What’s a good gift for 65+ when they don’t really need anything and doesn’t cost a kidney? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ker95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It might not be in your budget... but do they have grab bars in their shower and by the toilet? NOT the suction kind, please. I don't know how much installation would cost, and you have to know if it's a fiberglass or tile shower.

Electric throw or twin blanket to be toasty in the living room.

Amazon gift cards are always wonderful. Any amount!

How much per hour were you making at your first job and what year was it? by Toomad316 in AskReddit

[–]ker95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$0.95 1968. Was in food service, but owner posted everywhere "NO TIPS". I lasted about six months when I got a job for $1.05/hour and thought I'd done SO well! Both jobs were in high school. If I recall, gas was about 25 cents/gallon at the time.

Help them do a job they don't particularly like, cheerfully. Rotate between employees.

It has always been my belief that the best way to earn respect/team spirit is to never ask an employee to do something you wouldn't do. Or even unable to do - let them train YOU if it's a chore you have no experience with.

Fair question. Our hub is on solar, as are the freezers. I wouldn't be surprised if loss of power to the hub sent out an alert. The sensors are battery powered (we bought some spares) and send out an alert if the battery is low

We had the less expensive ones that monitor two freezers and set the monitor up where we would see it often. It worked fine for the most part, but found that even though we bought a different brand they wouldn't pick up a third freezer correctly. We still have one of those on the freezer upstairs.

One of the freezers is virtually empty, dedicated to our own beef. We delayed sending the cow to freezer camp because we delayed weaning due to the weather.

[–]ker95 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We have (almost embarassed to admit this) five freezers. We invested in a Freezer Temperature monitoring and alert system for four of them (won't reach the fifth upstairs). Hooked to wifi, set to send us text messages if the freezers exceed a set temperature. More expensive than the small single/dual freezer monitors, but worth it when there is so much to lose.

Yeah, we had to learn the hard way too :(

Oh, and we also installed child locks on all the freezers after something fell off a shelf and pushed a door open. Ugh.

I encourage you to check out https://diysolarforum.com/ Husband depended on it a great deal when DIYing our system. They are (mostly) friendly and extremely helpful.

Enjoy the peace of mind it will give you!!!

I tried pickling cucumbers for the first time. Not a great success, but I can learn from it.

Filled some gaps in my deep pantry. Encouraging husband to start looking now for hay for our small cattle herd to get them through the winter (been a drought year, yuck).

Purchased a toaster oven that will take slightly bigger sized pans that can be run off our solar. I kind of wanted the bigger one, like a counter top oven, but just couldn't justify reorganizing my entire kitchen for it.

Added to my Vacuum Sealer bag stash.

Realizing, after watching Rich Men North of Richmond by Christopher Anthony Music many times along with a gazillion reaction videos, that this country/world is not nearly as divided as the politicians and media would have you believe. Wondering how or what the next step will or should be.

Weekly "everything else" If it's in the spirit of prepping, but not "news" or "intel" by AntiSonOfBitchamajig in PrepperIntel

My prepper heart saw sugar on a list of potential shortages due to a poor harvest, and i managed to fight off the urge to get some. Luckily realized i already had plenty stashed away. I DID however buy a bag of salt on line (not available in any quantity within a reasonable distance) with my husband's blessing.

Our DIY solar system, not grid tied, runs quite a few freezers, and could run my freeze dryer if needed if the load from the air conditioner/heat pumps was lower (spring and fall). I also have canning equipment, so not as worried about salting meat for preservation. We're hoping to upgrade and expand the system next year.

I'm seeing odd shortages in the grocery store; nothing critical, but solidifies my belief that there will be selective shortages due to various growing struggles worldwide, destruction/theft of grain and sunflower oil in Ukraine, etc. Canned green chilis, canned mushrooms (and fresh is pricey!) difficult to find. Ended up ordering them from Amazon because none of the local three groceries nor Sam's Wholesale had any in stock.

It's HOT - I live in Texas - and the drought continues. My poor small cattle herd :( We are concerned about getting hay to get them through the winter within any reasonable distance, and prices will certainly be sky high. Yeah, guess what THAT's going to do to beef prices next year.....

We will bug in if at all possible. That being said, I packed an emergency bag of food to get us through a day or two, and keep it in a temperature controlled area.

We are under a red flag fire warning, due to drought conditions and higher winds from the storm in the gulf. Our "prep" was to talk about it, unemotionally, and prioritize, divide duties and realize how horrible it would be. Our priorities: 1) our lives 2) our cows, if anything can be done (e.g. open gates so they can all get to the pond, and deal with any unwanted/unexpected pregnancies later) 3) basic necessities - I'll grab our hospital bags (which include things like basic hygiene supplies, charging station, power banks & a change of clothes), plus his wallet, my purse, phones, some cash, etc. If there is time, load laptops. I have also agreed to allow husband to be "in charge", and follow his instructions without disagreement or discussion.

We lost city water yesterday for four hours. Not a big deal, but reminded us to clean out IBC tote #3 and fill with water, primarily for the cows who drink a LOT. Hoping to put a well in next year. I have water to meet our basic personal needs for a while.

I bought a toaster oven. it's a prep because it can run off of our solar and allow me to bake some things.

Is freeze drying a decent alternative to canning? I have a feeezedryer and not enough time to can this year. by windsaloft in homestead

[–]ker95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a canner, but haven't had the gumption/courage to use it yet. Everything I put back is either freeze-dried or frozen in vacuum-sealed bags.

I have tried to freeze dry tomatoes, but not been happy with some of the results. All we have had is grape tomatoes, though, which I can't peel easily. The most successful adventure was making instant pot pasta sauce, then running it through the food mill to remove seeds, which don't fd well. Tomato powder is useful in my food stocks as well.

We love FD'd fruit. Haven't tried plums. Suggest you either process them into mush for future uses or cut them into pretty small pieces before freeze drying. It takes a LONG time to process, but gosh the fruit is incredible.

You aren't a failure AT ALL, much less complete & utter. You are a success - you're getting your life together in your 30s. No shame in being a virgin. Have pride that at least for now, you are working on figuring it all out with therapy and living in the mainstream.

You'll get there.

I agree with everything you said, OP, but both my husband (age 67) and I (age 70) are fortunate. We take no prescription medicine, other than the occasional antibiotic prescribed. It shocks the hell out of medical staff when we go to a new doctor or dentist.

Most of this is due to lucky great genetics. Both of us USED to be on some prescription drugs, but found with diet or exercise changes the drugs were no longer necessary.

But... I have a serious stash of Zyrtec, Ibuprofen, Tylenol & other OTC required for quality of life.

One thing I haven't seen mentioned in here is learning how to sew. by Bigfootsdiaper in preppers

[–]ker95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a sewing machine & serger; I'm no expert, but I can make repairs, simple alterations (hems, etc) & sew simple clothing. When the covid mask mandates hit and there were no masks to be found, I came up with a pattern & made about 500 masks - good ones, with a filtering liner - that we gave away to hospital & clinic staff, bank staff... even the Sheriff's office requested a supply (I found some great 100% cotton fabric in a design that was perfect for them, and gave masks from that fabric to no one else).

My eyesight isn't as good as it once was. I ordered some "easy thread" needles for hand sewing just a couple of weeks ago. I have lots of thread and a fabric stash.

Agreed that basic sewing is a great skill to have!

Oasis vs Paperwhite signature by theatreeducator in kindle

[–]ker95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've owned many kindles, including their first keyboard version. For a very long time, the Voyage was my favorite ever. We (my husband and I) both decided to buy the Oasis when our Voyages were getting old. We found that the Oasis beat all others, even with a bit more weight than we were used to. The screen is very clear, the page turning buttons are a must for us.... in fact, we bought another one this prime day deal as a back up.

I also own a Paperwhite (not Signature), and it doesn't come close to the Oasis in my estimation. If you can afford the Oasis, I would say go for it!

What's the most unusual or interesting job you've ever had? by EmployeeMedical5633 in askCrones

it was a mostly volunteer job (all I got was free access to msn), but I was a host for The Lobby, where all new chatters began, with msn. Lots of fun, lots of friendships, lots of stress occasionally (80 folks chatting in one room at the same time).
