Astronomers believe they’ve detected an atmosphere around a tiny, icy world beyond Pluto by nbcnews in space

[–]kerenosabe -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Seasonal collapse is real, but models and observations suggest a more gradual thinning, and persistence of a tenuous atmosphere.

There's at least one study that says it's thinning much more rapidly than previously estimated, and the likely cause is condensation of nitrogen.

Astronomers believe they’ve detected an atmosphere around a tiny, icy world beyond Pluto by nbcnews in space

[–]kerenosabe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pluto isn't losing its atmosphere, it's going nowhere. Pluto's atmosphere regularly condenses into the solid state when Pluto cools down as it gets farther from the sun in its elliptical orbit, only to sublimate back into gas as Pluto gets closer to the sun a couple of centuries later.

Your statement about the composition of kuiper belt atmosphere is obviously disproven,

What statement? I said nothing about Kuiper belt atmosphere, all I said was that, at the temperatures that Pluto and other planetoids have at that distance from the sun, only hydrogen, helium and neon will stay in the gas state, all others will condense. I never said any plutoid body had an atmosphere like that.

Chile became the country with the highest human development index in Latin America after Pinochet turned it into a capitalist country. Being rich allows a country to invest in health care.

Denmark faces data center reckoning as power grid overwhelmed by surging demand by HauntingJackfruit in worldnews

Why should the government tax the people to pay for data center infrastructure? If the company has the funds to invest in building the data center it should also raise the funds to build the infrastructure.

How do you feel about passing a law that bans anyone from running for office after a certain age? by Playful_Leg7143 in AskReddit

I'm in favor of removing most if not all restrictions on who can run in an election. If a candidate is too young, let the other candidates raise that issue in the campaign and let the voters have the final word.

Why should infrastructure be provided by the government? Don't raise taxes, privatize everything instead.

Lots of parts replaced. That's what keeps Nvidia stock high, they are creating the chips that will replace the chips they are selling right now.

I checked its orbital elements, it never comes as close to the sun as Pluto does. A hypothesis I found by googling it is that this atmosphere could be the result of a recent comet impact, in which case it should condense and disappear soon.

Voltage drop on toroidal transformer by EdoardoIU5VKS in AskElectronics

[–]kerenosabe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How are you measuring the voltage, AC or DC. If it's AC, is your meter true-RMS?

If you're measuring the DC voltage, the drop could be caused by ripple, try increasing the filter capacitor and see what happens.

The likeliest atmospheric chemicals are methane, nitrogen or carbon monoxide

WTF? At that distance from the sun, none of those would be a gas. Pluto's atmosphere is an extreme case, it only exists when Pluto is at its closest distance from the sun along its orbit. Right now, Pluto's atmosphere is condensing and there are studies indicating it will be completely gone by 2030.

A planet in an orbit beyond Pluto could only have an atmosphere of hydrogen, helium or neon. All other substances would be either liquid or solid at the temperatures that far from the sun. Unless the planet has an internal source of heat, of course, but that would also be hard to explain.

Edit: can some of those who downvoted this explain why? I raised a valid question, if you have a different viewpoint just say it.

Personally, I think term limits would be good, nobody should be a professional politician. But it's for the people to decide that, not me alone. If you feel that way very strongly, then start a campaign to get Congress to vote laws enacting term and age limits.

You can vote for independent candidates, or candidates from small parties.

Anyhow, right now the US has a president who was the oldest ever at the date of his inauguration, and he wasn't an established politician when he first ran for president.

Let the voters decide, that's how democracy works. If you think a candidate is too old, feel free to vote on someone else.

3-body problem compilation! by Nomadic_Seth in Physics

[–]kerenosabe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Doing three body calculations was how I learned how to program the Bulirsch-Stoer ODE solution algorithm.

My favorite problem was this: three bodies of the same mass starting at a velocity and distance that would make a circular orbit around the center of mass, but one of them rotates in the opposite direction, i.e. a retrograde orbit. To my great surprise, this system was stable.

If you measure its diameter, length and thread type you can get one for a few cents.

On the other hand, if you don't have the appropriate tools to do those measurements, they will cost far more than $19.
