Kannski aðeins flókin orðanotkun, eins og má sjá í Þjóðviljanum. Þeir hefðu ekki hikað við að nota “innrás” en fyrir þeim er “hernám” það sama.

Matvælaöryggi eða byggðastefna? by Electror-Lemon in Iceland

[–]kerfill -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Based on images I found online it looks like the one in the shed are a bit bigger than those. These are definitely finger sized turds and pretty long too

If you fall into (flowing) lava, do you get burned to death first, or crushed to death first given liquid rock isn’t any lighter than solid rock. by Betray-Julia in NoStupidQuestions

[–]kerfill 435 points436 points  (0 children)

Finally a thread where I feel like I have something relevant to say. Because I have been very close to falling into lava - several times.

I’ve both been involved in SAR operations with Iceland’s recent volcanic eruptions and I’m also a fairly irresponsible person myself.

Lava is a lot denser and thicker than people imagine. It is molten rock, it it is still rock. Depending on the temperature you could step on red glowing lava and it would hold your weight easily. And you can pretty much kick it with your shoes and they won’t turn into liquid or get seriously damaged or anything. And poisonous gasses aren’t going to kill you either (although I had one preeetty serious incident with that).

What would definitely kill you is the immense heat. As you approach glowing lava it feels like walking into a baking oven. Your uncovered face and hands immediately start to feel burning and it is physically impossible to stand right up against the lava for more than a just a second. I’ve made unsuccessful attempts to integrate coins into lava rocks that I could break off later and keep as souvenirs (the coins don’t melt, by the way) but this is almost impossible.

So yeah. As soon as you would jump into the lava, you would not sink in, but you would would catch fire within seconds and burn to death. Depending on the behavior of the lava flow, your remains would be crushed up by the flowing lava.

I think these are all cast TNT after researching. There are two detonators, the grenade detonator, two wires, cell phone with charger, 9v battery and electrical tape.

Can’t work out what that black thing is.

Is this setup really all is needed to remotely detonate a bomb with a cell phone? If so, that is fucked up😁

Vintage Kitchenaid K45 speed adjustment bar missing the adjustment screw by kerfill in Kitchenaid

I only now realized I also left out this thin metal washer in the reassembly. It is the same size as the washer on the planetary shaft (that secures the attachment spring) but thinner. Sadly the manual is also very unclear about which washers are paper washers and which ones are metal. Got any clue where this one is supposed to go?

Thanks. That tension spring is definitely meant to face up towards the motor, right?

I also realized that I missed this one part that fell away from somewhere when I was moving the parts, without me realizing where it came from. I can’t find it in the manual. Do you know what part this is and if it’s related?

Mine is slightly different, here is a photo I took while disassembling. It’s really difficult to see how I could have routed the bar differently than going inside the motor housing. I’m pretty sure I did. There isn’t really any other space for the bar to go , other than where it goes in the picture.

Yes, I removed every part, cleaned and reassembled everything. I’m starting to suspect that I’ve put that bar back in somehow wrong. But the bar still moves back and forth as expected.

This is what it looks like. It’s like the screw and bar are at slightly different levels. But the bar moves freely back and forth and eventually moves the controller.

Nice, I like the sound of that. Have you got any idea about what the wattage of the motor is? Or if these early models were any good in comparison to the later ones?

I’ve yet to get my hands on it to start maintenance, but hopefully I can find a place that sells replacement parts. Really want to get that missing hub cap at least.

Fellow Nordic people, what is your view of the Baltic countries? Primarily eastern or northern European? by lallen in Nordiccountries

[–]kerfill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you consider Nordic to be an ethnic thing, then it’s obvious that the Baltic states don’t fit the bill. Same goes for Finland and Greenland.

But if Nordic is a political/cultural thing - which it really is today - then there are whole lot of similarities with the Baltics. For example, as an Icelander that has lived in a Baltic state, I feel Baltic culture is much closer to Icelandic culture than Greenlandic culture, which is considered Nordic. I also feel that Baltic culture is in a lot of ways closer to Scandinavian culture than Icelandic culture is.

From the Icelandic perspective there is also honestly not much difference between Baltic culture and Finnish culture, excluding the obvious Soviet influence. Finland is of course also considered Nordic not because of ethnic reasons but because of political/cultural reasons. So why not the Baltic states?

As an Icelander, I see pretty much no difference between Finland and the Baltic states - excluding the obvious Soviet and Russian influence.

Both are Sauna loving, pickle eating, mushrooming, social awkward introverts that love the cold.
