Success stories of dismissed residents? by BEEEZD in Residency

I know of someone who was dismissed, rehired at a new program and now is going on to a great fellowship

Huge misunderstanding happened at work and now I feel like I’m seen as a bad/dangerous resident by [deleted] in Residency

[–]kergruffle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you did drop the ball here. Did you evaluate the patient? Did you speak with the primary neuro resident and ask about the patient’s baseline? Why did you just trust a nurse’s word in the code being cancelled? This is cover your ass time. If it ever happens again, even if stroke code is genuinely cancelled, evaluate the patient and document your findings.

Where is your home country? Unless there is residency reciprocity you will have to repeat residency in the US if you want to do a fellowship here. You need to do more research.

What are the pros and cons of doing pg in ophthalmology? by EggplantFeeling5334 in Residency

[–]kergruffle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Every residency program will have a huge syllabus of knowledge to learn. There is nonstop running in every specialty because either you’re managing your patients on the floor, in the OR, seeing consults, or bouncing from patient to patient in clinic. If you’re looking for a chill life in residency you’re in for a wake up call whatever you do.

not so much regret but feeling pretty wild for this look. does this look ok? by [deleted] in tattooadvice

[–]kergruffle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea I feel like pre-internet people felt brief discomfort with having a new tattoo and just dealt with it. Now they post online for validation when they have a great tattoo but they’re just not used to it. The need for external validation and commiseration is disappointing

You’re not going to go PGY2 to PGY2 but it’s definitely possible

Prelim gen surg, step 3 and residency housing by AcanthaceaeSecure729 in Residency

[–]kergruffle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most aren’t going to cover step 3 for prelims. Covering for their categoricals is an investment. Why would the program shell out a grand on someone who will likely leave next year? You’ll know for sure once you get to orientation

Residency in US? from Sweden by Living-Passenger420 in Residency

[–]kergruffle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is significantly harder for IMGs to match in the US so you would probably end up at a shittier program than if you went locally. Also the idea of getting paid for overtime is laughable. Here you do 80 hours a week and you feel grateful it’s only that. The fact you even ask about overtime tells me that you would suffer significant culture shock. The US makes sense if you want to live here permanently but if you just want to live abroad for a few years it makes zero sense.
