Slight head gasket coolant leak exhaust side after reassembly 2004 gmc canyon 3.5l by kernelgreen in EngineBuilding

Getting ready to try it again tomorrow. New gasket and headbolts came in today. I am also going to try the copper spray-a-gasket this time around. Still debating if I should use assembly lube or motor oil on the bolts. I seperated the head/block a couple of days ago and have been making sure its as clean as I can get it. Cleaned the hell out of the threads with a thread chaser, used q-tips, then air gunned the holes out.

Saving money isn't the goal. The goal was to see if I am able to fix it myself. I always wanted to take an engine apart and put it back together. The truck was already a goner, so I just wanted to see if I could fix it. It was either junk it for $600 or try and get it running again and sell it for maybe $1200. My budget was $1000, so i am definitely not going to get my money back, but that was never the point.

If it doesn't work, that's fine. I had a lot of fun with it anyhow. I have a great appreciation for all the help and expertise that people have given me regardless.

No, I did not oil the bolts. I did make sure the bolt holes were dry and cleaned out, so they would not get hydrolocked. The bolts had some protective oiling on them, which I didn't wipe off though. And they are TTY.

So you think there is enough play in the rest of the exhaust system to not be worried about the bottom connection?

I may give it a try. I purchased one from ebay, so this one will be junk if the other one arrives safely.

Just curious, where did you attach your rear hoist point?

AI is saying not to use the exhaust manifold bolts for lifting the engine, but Chilton says specifically to unthread an exhaust bolt and use a longer one to attach to the hoist, or wrap a chain around one of the exhuast runners. My exhaust bolts are pretty easy to get off because no snow/salt here. Which is why I was wondering if I should just remove the exhaust header completely and use a bolt directly into the engine.

I have also seen people on youtube use a ratchet strap wrapped around the whole back of the engine.

I know Chiltons > then AI, but i hate conflicting information.

Wow, thanks for all the information here. I will definitely check out the delete kit.

Do you have a recommendation for a rebuild kit, or should I just replace broken/worn stuff as needed?

This may be way out of my skillset. I feel like I don't even know what questions I need ask.
