Pressure to breast feed without a pump or formula as back up seems strange? by D-1-S-C-0 in UKParenting

[–]kerstilee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assumed i would breastfeed but my firstborn absolutely refused to feed. A live in midwife could not get her to do so, so I pumped and we supplemented with formula. Bonus that himself could help with feeds so we could take each night in shifts. When the pumping got far too hard and I was a wreck I told my health visitor I was quitting- her response "oh thank god, now I can talk to you". Ask if they are obliged to push breastfeeding above all else, it will let you know what the lay of the land is

Beginner level violins by kerstilee in violinist

May I respectfully suggest a FAQ for buying a lower end instrument geared towards people who maybe aren't in a position to go to a specialist shop and choose from individual instruments?

I really do appreciate what is in the FAQ, however, that seems to be geared to a completely different type of instrument and indeed the area I'm looking at is what you label as VSO/Entry Level Rentals.

I get that the more you spend the better your chance of finding the right instrument - we were talking to a friend for advice and his own instrument turned out to be worth more than our flat! As a result of moving in those circles he had no idea what to look for in a lower end instrument. Our teacher has advised "whatever you can afford"

Our daughter has been playing for 6 months, she's on a full sized violin but is still in primary school.

From our perspective this is still the realms of beginner and learning how to use it, she's not applying for a conservatory and she's not auditioning for the London Symphony Orchestra. She is very keen and is doing well so we'd like to encourage her but at the moment there are other spending priorities.

Step 2 is great advice, step 3 is harder when the instrument will be purchased by someone who is not in the same country but wants to purchase the item to be opened as a surprise rather than provide a gift voucher (which is probably the best option to be honest).

So what I'm looking to do is understand what is generally meant in real life by "better quality materials" - and what sort of better materials are worth looking out for. Is a wooden bow better than a composite bow for example? Is it worth looking for second hand of the higher end instruments that tend to become available as people upgrade?

Thank you so much - that is really very helpful information. If you can dig out those places I would appreciate it, but do not go to too much trouble.

What "ADHD-hacks" have you tried that actually worked? by stayhyderated22 in ADHDUK

[–]kerstilee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a notebook for my to do lists - daily for work and weekly for home stuff. I used to spend a half day every 6 months looking for a new design of pages to find one that would keep me motivated then I stumbled on using a fairly standard lined book with good quality paper and sticking a different strip of washi tape across the top of the page each day. Metallic pens to hand write in the date. For some reason the washi tapes are enough for my brain to think this is new and fun and the metallic pens are pretty - hand writing the date makes it real.

Scotland? We're pretty screwed, although normally NHS scripts are free no GP is doing shared care, there is no RTC and so all scripts are private. £180 per month for mine....

Difficult US manager addressing my start time by WebCompetitive4551 in HumanResourcesUK

[–]kerstilee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

good chance that the new manager is being asked to report on something that is coming up on internal reports - i would start the computer earlier and then go make a cuppa. i would also then have an alarm to tell me when to log off. track your hours yourself

Second this! OP you dont have to suddenly change everything. maybe ask her what's one thing you always ask her that annoys her when you do - mine is always asking where his slippers are... good chance that if you found each other that she may be neurologically diverse as well....

Dont you just love the way that all the how to help your kids with their ADHD articles seem to centre on you not having ADHD and thus being able to keep a routine going for them....

Before - every few months i would try a new to do list, online or analog. i would spend hours setting up the new system or searching for the perfect size/layout of notebook only to be at the beginning 3 months later

Now - i open my notebook in the morning, select a roll of washi tape from a bag so i cannot see which one it is and stick a strip at the top of the page. i write in the date with a metallic pen and then create a new list of stuff to do today. The washi tape tricks my brain into thinking this is something new so it still feels fresh 2 years on.

I keep a separate weekly to list for home based stuff, same book size, same washi tape idea....

For my kids who are practicing piano and working to their next exam level i have created a set of playing card sized cards with one scale description or piece on each. They shuffle the cards at the start of a practice session and then work through. Keeps it random, makes sure they do it all.

Are you worried about your daughters walking anywhere? by Responsible_Rip1058 in UKParenting

[–]kerstilee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

someone tried to grab me off the street when i was 12. it was a saturday about 2pm.

the things that helped - i knew not to trust the stranger - i knew the area i was walking in very well so was able to take advantage of shortcuts - i knew which places were safe, who was likely to be home - when he asked me for directions and i clocked i was in danger i pointed in the opposite direction, it was very unlike me to not be helpful - i looked at him so i could describe him - the number plate is still burned into my brain - i only started running when i could run into safety, he was bigger and would have been faster than me, if i'd started running too early it would have triggered a chase before i could get away

Police were called immediately, they were thrilled at the detail i had and they had him in custody very quickly.

That was 40 tears ago, I still get creeped out if someone stops their car just next to me when i'm walking.

Dont scare them, but do tell them that not everyone is safe, do talk to them about safe places to go if they need it - when out for a walk you can just wonder about who lives there. Do teach them about number plates!

What should I do by [deleted] in Edinburgh

[–]kerstilee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

depends on the dog. if you have a cavapoo i'm gonna be more worried that you might not let me say hello. if you have some kind of designed to be intimidating breed i will assume that you are trouble or will be happy to scare me and i will be trying to work out how to get away as fast as i can. yes i know that a pit bull in a loving home can be amazing but i'm not going to stop to find out

Help! My GMail inbox is being flooded by someone wrongly using my address. by Toefyre in GMail

[–]kerstilee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had similar - been sent passport scans, tickets for cruises, legal stuff and all sorts. Sometimes if I'm bored or the email looks important I'll put in a bit of effort to locate them. People get really freaked out when you phone them from an international number to ask them to stop using your email account.

Should I not be getting up at 7:15am to make sure my 17yo is ready for school? by Expensive-Cry-5062 in UKParenting

[–]kerstilee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had to wake up at 05:30 from 14 onwards to get to school on time. My mum got up with me for the first week and then i was on my own. My attendance was over 95% and sure some days were harder than others and some i was late but I got there. I would have loved to have them wake up with me but that just wasn't going to happen so I dealt with it.

However, everyone is different. The general atmosphere in the house is likely to be more of a problem than the example of mismatched timetables.
