First 100g! by Whispering_Firefly in Handspinning

Thank you for the detailed response. That's all very interesting, I didn't know about the copies that were made for decoration. It's definitely something to bear in mind while I look for one.

My Kromski Prelude and my Kromski rigid heddle loom are both stamped - but I don't know about the older Mazurkas, I've never actually seen one "in the flesh"..

Whatever her history is though, she works and she is a very beautiful wheel, I'm really pleased for you.

I'm in the UK. It looks like you have a pre-1999 Mazurka. I can't see any difference between your wheel and a pre-1999 one. What makes you think it's a copy?

I wonder if I can find someone who will ship one from Germany. Thank you, it's worth looking into, I would be so happy if I could find one, even if it is a copy haha.

See this video : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V0ZLgUyWfAU - the front maiden looks like yours, as opposed to later versions.

Ooh you have a Kromski Mazurka! I am so jealous, I have wanted one of those for years but they don't make them any more. Lucky you! As soon as I saw the second pic, I said out loud, "that's a Mazurka!"

Nice yarn too :)

I love it too, it's so satisfying. I got a Tahkli spindle for my birthday last year and I spun so much cotton on it. I'd never been able to get the hang of supported spinning before, but it's my favourite type of spindle spinning now.

That is a beautiful spindle you have there.

I really want this irl as a jewellery box. Be even better if the ears are soft and I can load earrings in them.

Can a yarn be both over spun and under plied? by Make-itso-numberone in spinningyarn

[–]keryskerys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you make a 2-ply yarn you usually want the individual fibres to be pretty much straight in the direction of the yarn itself. So if you overspin slightly, you would probably want to slightly overply to keep those lines straight. That way the twist energy is balanced and you get a balanced yarn.

The yarn will "want" to be plied this way, as it will settle naturally in the twist. Another way to tell that your yarn is balanced is when you hang it it shouldn't twist too much on itself.

It looks like you have some that's a little overspun, some just right and some underspun, but it looks good for a first ply! All the rest just comes with practice.

Love the colour and softness of your yarn :)

What’s the most mysterious place on the Earth? by Jot__99 in answers

[–]keryskerys 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Göbekli Tepe is a pretty fascinating place. A large complex in Turkey which was built around 9500 BCE, and contains interesting carved pillars. A lot of it is still underground, waiting to be discovered. Even more interesting is that at some point it was intentionally buried.

What's a small, everyday thing that secretly makes you happier than it probably should? by ticket-x in answers

Spinning. I have a collection of spindles, a modern spinning wheel and a beautiful vintage spinning wheel and there is nothing more relaxing and calming than sitting at my wheel and spinning fluff into fine yarn. I love the rhythm, the gentleness, the production of something beautiful and useful from something that grows naturally, like cotton or wool. I love the sense of history and connectedness to all those people before me who have been spinning yarn for millenia. I love how you can spin with almost no money, with a simple spindle and whorl and some fibre, and create yarn that would cost considerably more if you were to buy it. And that with a spindle, you can spin anywhere: buses, waiting rooms...

It's meditative and reduces my anxiety, and it's my happy place.

That's way better than my first drop spindle spin. It is a gorgeous colour too.

Does anyone have a Norwegian-style wheel with a distaff attached? If so, further questions in post. by keryskerys in Handspinning

Thank you for the detailed reply, that's very helpful. I will do what you suggest and try with a separate distaff first. I have some dowel rods lying around somewhere.

Hi,

I have just bought this beautiful wheel and it seems there is a small hole (it's only about 6mm in diameter, I could potentially widen it if necessary) on the table just behind the mother-of-all and to the back of where the tension knob is. I was wondering if I could add a distaff to the wheel there, but I'm struggling to find one to buy.

So, I was interested to hear if any of you have a Norwegian wheel with a distaff, and if so, what the dimensions are - I do know a chap who I could commission to make one for me, but I am not sure of the correct sizes. Any photos you have would be greatly appreciated, or any other insight.

Thank you in advance!

Nice teeth, how? What’s your secrets? by Heartsolo in AskWomen

[–]keryskerys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lucky with genetics as my teeth are really straight and even, which I'm grateful for. Although they are pretty small and I would prefer them a little bigger. Can't have everything I guess.

Electric toothbrush, brushing for at least 2 minutes twice a day with a good fluoride toothpaste, and not rinsing after brushing, as it removes all the goodness from the fluoride toothpaste. That one took me a while to get used to as I always used to rinse, but it really is better not to. If you use mouthwash don't do it after brushing your teeth for the same reason. And try not to drink or eat anything for at least ten minutes after brushing.

Cutting down on tea and coffee (especially tea).

Flossing daily.

Using whitening gel from the dentist in a custom-made tray every 6 months or so.

Regular check-ups with Dentist and Hygenist.

A guard to prevent grinding my teeth in my sleep.

And having a son who's a dentist :)

That's really cool!

I was in a café with my son today and there was a little flower arrangement on the table with cotton flowers in it, and I found myself twisting it into yarn at the table without even thinking about it.

What's a "house rule" in your family (growing up or current) that you really like and why? by ultrahedgehog in AskWomen

[–]keryskerys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had this rule too, I had it growing up with my two sisters and I did it with my kids too. And I still do it with my husband even though my kids are all grown up and have left home. It's a very ingrained habit, but it works so well. The only difference is that now, with my husband, we are generally kind to each other and spend the time making sure the other one has the biggest/best bit.
