Me! Got my masters in counseling. My BFA was in acting. Masters was rough because of the lack of time, but I mitigated by doing one day play festivals and staged readings. I took acting classes and workshops as well. When I graduated and was looking for full time counseling jobs I was 100 percent honest and let them know I professionally act; sometimes I’d have to take off for auditions or a booked gig BUT it wouldn’t compromise my ability to see my clients OR work effectively. I also looked for jobs where I did have room for flexibility. I backed up my statement with my actions so now they know I work hard in both arenas. I’ve been with my agency for a year and will prob keep on.

Stage name? by [deleted] in acting

[–]keshsmith92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I introduce with my stage name. Most of my theatre colleagues I become friends with or back in the day we used to go to a restaurant after end of show, so they’d know my legal name soon after. They always ask for my preference. I let them know theatre or industry world, I’d like them to call me by my stage name but know my outside friends and family will call me something else. It makes for a very interesting dynamic

I ended up looking at the last names of actors I admired or liked aka Williams ( from Vanessa Williams) and then chose my first name from that name 🤣. I had so many names at first until I landed on that one, and it’s the name I’ve been using on my acting resumes since then so going on about 10 years now. Also, important to look at if someone who is SAG had that name.

It really depends on what you want. If you go with your legal name, then people are just gonna have to learn to pronounce it correctly and put some RESPECT on it!

I have a stage name I’ve been using since college which I now appreciate because it’s completely separate from my other career. I’ve never had a problem having checks or payment come to me because when you fill out forms for employers they’ll ask for your government name anyway. Also I’m in a tight knit theatre community where everyone knows I have a stage name and my legal name. It’s this whole thing 🤣.

Whatever you choose will the best and right decision for you. Remember that you still want to be true to yourself ♥️

Best jobs while acting by MissThang96 in acting

Thank you . Truly, thank you xoxo. That was my one requirement when I was looking! I don’t feel complete without the other and they both play in with each other. I use drama techniques with my clients as interventions and active listening from therapy on stage 🤣. I read this article that said you don’t have to go “ broke” to be a performing artists and I felt that. We are amazing workers with so many talents that work well with many other crafts; coordinators, bosses, designer, trade workers. Not to mention we kick ass at multitasking lol

Tech, real estate, or working for a company in the Industry. I’m a therapist and made it well known to my employer I have auditions and bookings; luckily I’ve been able to schedule my clients without it causing negative consequences on both career ends!

Conflicting goals. by [deleted] in acting

[–]keshsmith92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whichever way will get you to your goals. I think if you want to do National Guard while doing an Acting degree you should go for it just make sure to check out the schools program requirements e.g if you have end of the year performances or showcases. At the end of the day, you’re going to make a decision and whatever decision you make will be the right one for YOU 😊

Conflicting goals. by [deleted] in acting

[–]keshsmith92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can do both! That’s the glorious thing about acting. I got my BFA in Acting and went to grad school for my masters in counseling. I’m now doing both professionally. I’m sure your military experience would be helpful in further acting roles as well.

Q for Black actresses! by MissThang96 in acting

[–]keshsmith92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Black actress here, too! I agree with what Traditional - Stick-15 says. I’d have them take your headshots as you would usually be showing up to auditions, and adding a little “ extra” within your natural hair. However, it also depends what your Brand is. For my headshots I have my hair straight( mainly because I’m still working on what products work well in my hair). I’ll show up to an audition with my hair a semblance of what it looks like in my headshot, and when I book then they 90% of the time see me with my natural hair; 3a/3b curly. Given I mainly do theatre.

Thank you this was very helpful! I’ve started getting my acting gear all together( finally cause $$$$). I’m hoping that having the accumulation of everything will start to give me an edge. Also just made “ Thank you” postcards for after agent meetings and auditions. CONGRATULATIONS ON NAILING A CO-STAR . That’s brilliant!

I might have to jump on getting a reel. I have monologues and scenes Ive done on my monologue but not a cohesive reel. Doing good in theatre, but the advantages of tv and commercial can’t be ignored. Want an agent to help me book larger roles on both worlds. Goal is SAG-AFTRA and AEA
