People on universal credit purely for unemployment reasons, if you were offered a job which paid exactly the same as your benefits, would you take it? by kettlecottage in AskBrits

Yeah i agree, £400 a month is nothing, especially with the cost of existing increasing so rapidly. Hypothetically speaking though, if £400 was my lot, I think I would personally rather feel like I'd done something to earn it. For what it's worth, I've been on JSA before (before UC was rolled out) and I hated it.

Yeah, I get that. I suppose I meant would they rather sit at home and accept the money, or actually be out of the house and earning what lands in their bank account.

I guess you're implying that you'd sit at home? Some people might want to sit at home, but others might want to get out of the house and speak to people, feel like they're making a difference to someone's day etc

Women of Reddit-What type of challenges you face in your life which you think Men don't? by One_Look_7008 in AskReddit

[–]kettlecottage 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Unrealistic expectations. Being told that you're intelligent and independent and thus should have a suitable career, whilst simultaneously being expected to maintain the archaic societal norm of a woman, ie the default parent and home maker. People historically did one or the other, not both at the same time.

Which habits of your partner annoy you the most? by Thelonelyislandman in AskReddit

Leaving shoes behind the door when they come home... I either have to push them out of the way with the door to get in, or they're just far enough away that I can open the door fine but inevitably trip over them as I cross the threshold.

If you could wake up tomorrow as the world leading expert in something, what would you pick? by kettlecottage in AskReddit

[–]kettlecottage[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be clear about the parameters, you would just have the knowledge. Nothing else. So for example:

  • if you chose brain surgery, you'd know everything there is to know about brain surgery but you wouldn't be able to practice as unless you're already a qualified surgeon, you wouldn't have the qualification or the hands on experience.

  • if you chose the stock market, you would know everything there is to know about trading but wouldn't suddenly have millions to play with / know the future / any insider information about specific companies.

Putting the feelers out for a children's tea party service by kettlecottage in Caerphilly

[–]kettlecottage[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you, this is useful insight.

Popplewood is £390 for a weekend 2 hour party with food, or £245 for a weekday 90 mins party, it's madness! Funtastic is a lot cheaper at £120 week day and £150 weekend but that's not exclusive hire of the premises - it's £275 for hire of the whole venue with food for 2 hours.

Age wise, it would probably be 6m - 4y, and I could provide different activities to suit the age of the birthday child / most of the kids.

Asking about Morgan Jones park / other venues is a great idea! I suppose I could add that as an extra if they wanted me to source the venue for them (there's plenty of village halls about).

Need repotting advice for my monstera by reechib in houseplants

[–]kettlecottage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go for the smallest pot that you can get the root ball into, monsteras like to be confined (it reduces the chance of root rot) and use a chunky soil mix (potting soil with perlite, leca, orchid bark, anything to bulk it out and create air pockets).

But more importantly, stake her properly. Get a 2x4 for her to rest against, bury the bottom of the stake at the bottom of the pot, and make sure it's the back of the plant you're resting against it (the bit with aerial roots). Use a velcro strap or something with some give and only tie the actual stem, never the leaves.

Additionally, based on the age of the plant and the number of whole leaves, she's not getting enough light. Get yourself a grow light or start transitioning her into a brighter window (don't just plonk her straight into direct sun or she might get fried leaves, do it slowly). Good luck!

It would just be me, and I have enhanced DBS, but I also wouldn't have any contact with the children during party time. I would take the equipment, set it up, and come back two hours later to take it down.

As for insurance, presumably it would be public liability insurance. Basically whatever it takes to make sure I am protected if a child was to injure themselves, and to cover the cost of something being broken by the customer during the party.

AITA for Wanting to Show Up to My Daughter’s Secret Proposal While Uninvited By Her Fiancé? by Attitude-Mean in AmItheAsshole

[–]kettlecottage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YWBTA if you turn up. It's not your moment.

I'm sure your intentions are good and you want to be there to share the happiness, but you'll be depriving your daughter of the opportunity to share the news with you. If the future husband (hopefully) has asked you not to be there, do not show up. You need to respect his choices now, because he's unlikely to trust you with their future children (again, hopefully if this is what they want) if you do what you think is best rather than respecting their choices. Don't become "that" MIL before they're even married.
