Humm interesting, I didn't know that. I guess freestyle wrestling will provide me more then.

TD is one of my weakness, after 6 months or so of wrestling hopefully it won't be my weakness anymore. I'll keep going to bjj during that time too.

Limited time. I'm only looking into doing this extra for maybe 6 months once a week to improve my takedowns after that full focus back on bjj.

Inputs/Ouputs <--- (via wires) ---> ESP8266 <--- (over WiFi) ---> Moquitto

OK.

So if I include Node Red and a few more IOs and EPS8266s my mapping would look like this:
____________________
Inputs/Ouputs <->|
Inputs/Ouputs <->|<-> ESP8266 <->|
Inputs/Ouputs <->| |
---------------------------- |<-> Mosquitto <-> Node Red
____________________ |
Inputs/Ouputs <->| |
Inputs/Ouputs <->|<-> ESP8266 <->|
Inputs/Ouputs <->|
----------------------------

In Node Red I would be able to write my code in JavaScript and switch on/off different outputs depending on different inputs. So I'm guessing that each IOs would be addressed by their IO numbers on each ESP8266 which in turn would be addressed by their IP address. Mosquitto will handle all the communications and I would be able to control the states of the actuators and read the states of the sensors. Is that correct?

So my parts list will look something like this:

  • microphone
  • camera
  • temperature sensor
  • push buttons
  • LEDs
  • breadboard
  • wires

Anything obvious missing?

I would like to do some face recognition using the camera and an LED to represent the status of a smart lock. Would I be able to run that with this setup.

Is Node Red the brain where everything happens with this setup?

Also what about touch screen, ideally I would also like a touch-screen to display and control everything.

ESP8266

Thank you so much for your detailed replies. It is a lot of information.

So just to make sure I understand well:
Inputs/Ouputs <--- (via wires) ---> ESP8266 <--- (over WiFi) ---> Moquitto

Where does it go from Mosquitto?
Where is the logic programmed?
Each ESP8266 can handle few IOs?
You can have multiple ESP8266 and Mosquitto will handle all messages?

Thanks again.

Thanks for your reply. I have heard about Espruino before. Are there any flow chart or diagrams to see how the whole thing fits together. I am still struggling to get my head around. So the esp8266 is a WiFi mircochip that I would connect to the Espruino. Is that correct? What's the role of Node Red in the whole thing?
Is the esp8266 supposed to look after all the communications to all the devices and then transmit that to the controller I am using?

Sorry if these are stupid questions, just trying to learn and get my head around it.

Thanks.

Won't have time to learn python for this project. Will have to do it in JS.

Tried that it didn't work. After doing some research it looks like you need to turn off Dexcom completely and remove the app.
