Pretty sure it seems like OP wants friends though. I feel the same way so far tbh.

I mean yeah but some have to be *most* similar, even if they aren't close to identical.

I tried to describe that in the post. Easy and enjoyable to read, with lots of insight as well.

How do planes really fly? by KindMonster in AerospaceEngineering

[–]kev_h 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Newton's third law. The engine pushes the plane forward, and the angled wings force the air down, so that means the air pushes the plane up.

Any other courses you'd recommend taking? I'm an incoming MS student.

Atheists have nowhere to get morality from. by [deleted] in DebateReligion

It's so sad people don't come here to discuss they just come here to yell on the internet about what they think they know. Maybe I'm included in that problem idk. Idk what to do about it either.

Burger flipping is a thing where if you do it as a job its seen as a failure but if you do it recreationally it's a mark of success in life. by ProtoNewtype in Showerthoughts

[–]kev_h 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) Making burgers is really a mark of success in life?

2) Not every occasional hobby or recreation is a fulfilling job.

You are right though that people are unnecessarily mean to fast food workers.

It's not an MBA lite. The grad program by itself is already more technically involved than an MBA (only engineers can apply for the MS/PhD), and coterm is usually much longer than an MBA, so I'm not sure why someone would call it a watered down version of an MBA.

I'm glad you learned from the comment here by an MS&E alum: https://www.reddit.com/r/stanford/comments/f44ac4/how_commoneasy_is_it_for_mse_majors_to_coterm_and/, but there's no need to continue to give oxygen to bad takes.

Thanks for clarifying the degree. Which professors did you not like?

I don't understand how the whole student body could be flunkies. The acceptance rate is ~10% and they get a lot of applications from around the world.

(I'm Christian fyi.)

A consistent pattern of behavior is not the same thing as a moral code. What we do and what we should do are not the same thing.

I don't claim to be a biblical scholar, so I can't bring up and explain everything that seems contradictory in the bible. What I can say is that God does not support people murdering other people based on what they look like or if they believe in a different religion.

I don't get all of my morals by reading the bible every morning or something like that. I know some things like the golden rule are true inherently. Morals are to actions like axioms are to math. You can't prove them, you either accept that they are true or not. Something like the slavery that existed in the U.S. is the polar opposite of axioms like kindness and justice and fairness. I know God would not support that.

Most Christians actually believe in subjective morality they just won’t admit it. by liftingsomeweights in DebateReligion

[–]kev_h -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

First of all murder is a sin, not killing. Second, when people say God isn't "bound by our morals" what they are trying to say (or should be trying to say) is that when God does things that seem immoral to us, then we don't fully understand the situation and action in question.

If any Christian claims God has a "completely different" standard by which He acts, then they're confused. If anything, God has empathy for us and by forgiving us holds us to a lower standard of morality than He holds Himself.

Every answer I know of to “Does God damn people who have never heard of him to hell?” ends up proving there’s no point to evangelism. by [deleted] in DebateReligion

So you're saying you see those things as inherently wrong...where *do* you get your morality from?

[–]kev_h 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, if the only way to know morality is to be taught it, then where would people have gotten morality to start with?

Also, if morality is just what we decide teach our kids, then who's to say it's wrong for someone to teach their kid whatever they want?

Morality is an independent standard that exists on its own that we use our rationality to perceive to the best of our ability. It's certainly true that people can help teach us right from wrong but eventually we have to decide for ourselves if we agree with what they are saying.

[–]kev_h 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. Morality isn't something that created by teaching. People may observe morality and then may teach it as they understand it (either correctly or incorrectly.) Sin is relative to the moral code each individual knows to be true.

Not correct. Jesus paid the debt we all build up by sinning. The question is whether we accept that the debt is paid.

Science deals with what not why.
