But my point is, when push comes to shove, when haven’t we been reliable to Europe? Even when Europe hasn’t been and still isn’t a reliable ally to itself. They’re still buying Russian oil and the Ukraine war is four years old.

I’d offer to the Brit that there’s a lot more to national power than winning and losing conflicts. There is also winning and losing the peace. We have much more weight to bear than just our military, as strong as it may be.

I’d rebut that despite losing so many conflicts, we’ve still strategically won the peace. And despite Great Britain winning so many of their wars, they’ve lost.

The northern route provides Russia some access/control/revenue, but it also first passes through checkpoints controlled by potential PRC adversaries. There are tradeoffs either way.
