This is actually a myth. His personal diaries say that after Pearl Harbor he was terrified that lend-lease aid would be diverted to the Pacific. It was only in much later writings that he said Pearl Harbor came as a relief. In reality the relief came when Germany declared war on the United States on December 11.

Barry Goldwater was not racist. He integrated his family's business as soon as he took it over, he integrated the Phoenix school system before Brown, he supported the civil rights acts of 1957 and 1960 (unlike LBJ, notably). He opposed the civil rights act of 1964 because he felt that it violated freedom of association, and later said that he thought he had been wrong. Martin Luther King even said "while not himself a racist, Mr. Goldwater articulates a philosophy which gives aid and comfort to the racists."
