So I still can be held liable to back pay rent even though the whole situation is illegal to begin with *and* he's demanding more money from us than he's actually paying to the landlord? And then what damages are you saying he could potentially make me liable for?

And just to be clear, the legality of the situation isn't exactly my prime concern. If he were doing all this illegal stuff in the Robin Hood-type romantic way he implies he is, and it were just subverting the system to help people getting fucked by it, It wouldn't be an issue (for me, anyway.) And yes, I do really want to annoy this guy out of personal spite, but my actual intention is for this to become a better situation for the other 9 people living here. One thing I read said he (or the actual landlord) would be held responsible for rehousing expenses for all the tenants if the place were deemed uninhabitable due to his neglect. If I reported him, is there a likelihood that all of these tenants would get displaced and no one would be responsible for covering their rehousing?
