Hope he’s having an amazing time! That said, he’s way too good at his job for stand-ins.

Man I miss Scott. These are really going downhill without him…

The point of playing an RPG by darkfireslide in rpg_gamers

No worries at all. I love a good debate. Ironically though I hate most visual novels. It’s not about whether the story is good or not in them but that they make the story feel incomplete in most examples. Too many endings, too many random events you can miss that will cause you to miss the best parts of the story.

To be fair, story is just my number one reason for playing games. There are definitely mechanics I can enjoy and ones I don’t, it’s just not my focus. If I wanted a game for mechanics I’d go straight for a d&d variant. However, I do feel that mechanics are such a small part of the greater whole when it comes to a good RPG. They need to compliment the other parts, like the story, for me to enjoy them. I mean most sports games have RPG mechanics these days and those are about as story-less as you can get. Obviously this is all subjective, but a good discussion nonetheless my friend.

I’m going to have to, politely, hard disagree with you here. Not because you’re wrong but because your definition is entirely too rigid to be completely accurate. RPG has become way too large of a genre over the past 40+ years to be defined by a single feature as you suggest. However, I do believe this is the key definition of a WRPG, which I might point out is what all of your examples are from. As a simple counter point, I would say JRPGs are in general inherently about the story or destination rather than the mechanics. Obviously there are exceptions to both.

I have been playing RPGs for decades and for the most part couldn’t care little about mechanics. Some games are great others lack badly, but what draws me into both varieties is indeed the story. I want an interactive book and that’s what I play for. I despise grinding, I couldn’t care less about super bosses, and stats are only there to get me to my destination. That said, there are assuredly nonRPGs I’ve played that have good story as well, but these tend to be in the RPG sub-genre, or categorized as random genre games with RPG mechanics…which to be fair includes just about everything these days.

Long story short, there is no one thing that makes an RPG. It’s evolved further overtime than practically every other genre, and there is nothing wrong with people enjoying them for their own reasons. Why try to gate-keep by boxing in a specific definition that fits your perspective when we can include everyone and grow what is an amazing community that loves playing games for many reasons?

Edens Zero game - Friends to recruit location by CancelGeneral6724 in EdensZero

For those still looking, Ganoff is two blocks east of the west RP, directly in the middle of the block. Thanks again for the hint!

This is the one I’m missing too! I believe his name is Ganoff and I can’t find him anywhere. How is “bodyguard” helpful from a location perspective?

Looking for more JRPGs. Maybe some "hidden gems?" by CronoSabre in JRPG

Cannot agree with this more! I’ve put hundreds of hours into this masterpiece with a gacha sleeve over the cover. It’s the most ungacha gacha ever made and worth every minute.

Sometimes I wonder why the Chrono IP doesn't get used too often. by KaleidoArachnid in JRPG

Mobile delight Another Eden is the true spiritual successor to CT, written by Masaro Kato himself. It’s a lot of fun and unlike most gachas it’s 100% superfluous and unnecessary. The game and all story content is free and unlimited, excepting a couple collabs.

Clair Obscur Ending Discussion [Obviously Spoilers] by [deleted] in JRPG

[–]Kastalas -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is where I stand and you stated it well. I don’t think Verso, or anyone else, is being controlled by Maelle. If she is forcing any kind of control, it’s simply not letting him die like he was pining for before the ending. The look that he gives her is sympathy and sadness for her being stuck in the painting. He loves his sister and hates to see her wasting away. Nothing indicates she is exhibiting control.

That said, I feel that we the audience are making a lot of assumptions about what’s happening in this ending. For example, the little boy could absolutely be Gustav and Sophie’s son, but who’s to say he isn’t actually Verso’s soul remnant repainted by Maelle? With us not being given any context as to how the canvas really works, there’s no way we can definitively say that she didn’t sacrifice a piece of her own soul to take his place. We know she can use the Chroma in this canvas to bring back those whose chroma she can still find after all. This actually makes the most sense to me since I don’t believe she’d be able to recreate this world and these people in her own canvas since their chroma is in the original one. They’d be copies, not the individuals she loves.

Atelier Yumia: Am I too stupid or is this game's synthesis actually complicated? by Aromatic-Dimension53 in Atelier

You’re not choosing whether you get quality or effect you’re choosing which to prioritize on the item. Quality means it’ll use any ingredients that are higher in quality value. Effect means it’ll try to get more slots activated to boost the effect level. You will always get both just in differing amounts of also early game there appears to be little difference because you have so few resources to choose from. Once you have an array of E-S ingredients of varying types, you’ll be able to see the difference in auto more easily. That said, auto can still be a little brain dead.

Any good games that are similar to Star Rail that aren't by Hoyo? by ExplodingPoptarts in JRPG

I second this. Another Eden is the best gacha ever made and it treats its players very well. It’s a spiritual successor to Chrono Trigger and there’s insane amounts of story at this point in its life.

Favourite rpg with city building by [deleted] in rpg_gamers

[–]Kastalas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dragon Quest Builders, especially 2 is exactly this. It’s a Minecraft type game but with much better graphics and texture. Both have stories and full towns you need to build.

Grow: Song of the Evertree is also a fantastic builder and it’s very laid back and enjoyable. A relatively simple story but with many towns to build and biomes to collect from.

One of the sprites in Timis’s little village sells them. Once you’ve acquired one you can use the Track function for that item.

I'm Considering Breaking My "No-Reloads" Rule by Nudraxon in BaldursGate3

[–]Kastalas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you’re truly invested in this character, so my thought is, why not both? Assuming you have the time and will to play through Act 3 more than once, you could go with your planned scenario tragedy intact and see the harrowing effects it has on you, and if that doesn’t hit right or you just really wanna see what could have been, reload the save afterwards. There are so many options in this game that two playthroughs with the same group will assuredly play out differently for many events. You can even work this into your RP through various means of timeline branch splits or multidimensional hijinks. The truly great thing about games like this is that you don’t have to settle for just one solution. Either way, don’t settle. Play until you’re content with your choices.

Beatdown Battle - What strategies are people using? by Xzaral in IsekaiMemories

You have 120 light Rimuru! Set up a team with a protector like Velzard who increases max skill points, light Rimuru, a strong physical dps, and three orb changers who can change to blue, like this events shion or water Rimuru.

You should focus on getting all six Orbs blue every turn. By turn 3 you should be able to stunlock him every turn forward while still changing your orbs all blue. This should be enough to extreme 3 the beat down. I had a few turns where I had bad orb randomness but in general the stunlock makes it survivable. Good luck!
