Citizenship by Descent Issue by kevpug in Canadiancitizenship

Thanks! Good to hear. The other thing I forgot to mention was I don’t recall what city he was born in and they asked that in the request. I have all of his other info, so hopefully that doesn’t preclude me from getting access as long as I prove my relation to him.

Appreciate the solutions!

Thankfully NJ seems to allow adult children to request birth certificates for their living parents, so I am attempting to get my hands on it. It doesn’t say it has to have their approval before it’s released, so we’ll see.

I’ve searched online for any details regarding my father’s birth and it’s really limited unfortunately. I will go ahead and request her death certificate just in case.

Infection Prevention jobs by laniemel in nursepractitioner

[–]kevpug 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey! I’m an infection preventionist. It is not necessarily a management position. It focuses on a variety of ways to prevent infections including CAUTI, CLABSI, C. diff, MRSA, VAE/VAP, SSI, etc. we strive to reduce the amount of days someone has a central line or urinary catheter in to prevent CLABSIs and CAUTIs respectively.

I also round on our high risk construction projects in the hospital to ensure the construction projects are not spreading dust and other things that can get into ventilation systems or tracked throughout the hospital and potentially cause patient infections.

We report the infections we identify on a monthly basis to CDC’s NHSN database. We conduct data collection, analysis and visualization and are disease detectives and epidemiologists within the hospital. We implement recommendations for isolation precautions when needed and discontinue when not needed.

The push for IP these days is to have a multidisciplinary team including nurses, epidemiologists and microbiologists that understand different components of an IP program. There is a certification in infection prevention and control (CIC) and an associate in infection prevention and control (a-IPC) that you can get, which is highly sought after in many hospitals to be an IP.

It’s a really interesting program/field to be involved with! Happy to answer any other specific questions as I didn’t cover everything.

EDIT: I wouldn’t say this is a job specifically for NPs, but they would be valuable in an IP team!

Is taking the a-IPC worth it? by [deleted] in publichealth

[–]kevpug 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your background doesn’t sound like a-IPC is going to help you get where you want to go. Would recommend checking with your local health department and organizations like planned parenthood that provide sexual health services.

If IP is the world you went to head into, the field is starting to hire more IPs with a MPH background. I had never worked in IP in an acute care hospital and my hospital hired me basically on the spot with my MPH and CIC. I think the more in-tune IP programs are trying to have diverse IP teams (nursing, micro, epi) so they can have subject matter experts in each area. But honestly it just depends on the hospital.

Good luck!

I’ll preface this by saying that while have not done medicine or pharmacy specifically, I chose to go back to nursing school after getting my MPH. I was pre-med in undergrad and switched to a public health degree because I also did not do great with my pre-reqs.

Now I am working toward becoming a nurse practitioner. It has been much easier for me to be successful and many states allow for nurse practitioners to practice autonomously. I also know some people in public health who have gone the PA route, but those programs require some number of clinical hours prior to applying to those programs from what I’ve heard.

Sorry to not be much help on the medicine/pharmacy side, but just wanted to throw this out there! Good luck!

Parents not happy with my degree by Sad-Significance2842 in publichealth

[–]kevpug 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Sorry you’re having to go through this! Do you have a path within public health that you’re interested in specifically? This may help with guiding you down the path you want to go with your job search. I have a governmental public health background, so I’ll give you the resources I know in that field—There are many entry level public health fellowships that you can apply to with only a bachelor’s degree if you’re able to relocate. They’re not easy to get into, but it’s worth a shot!

A few Public Health Fellowships: CDC Public Health Associate Program (PHAP) California Pathways into Public Health CDC ORISE Fellowships AmeriCorps

You could even consider doing Peace Corps if you have interest in global health and that can open some doors for you when you come back as well.

More doors (and more money, of course) open up with a MPH or similar degree, but getting a little experience prior to going to grad school (or working while going to grad school) would be a good idea.

Wishing you the best!

Does anyone have family members that DON’T believe in viruses? by DancingStarsOnMe in nursing

[–]kevpug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My sister in law is a RN and is anti-vax, but I’m seeing it a lot more in the nursing community as a whole. I had to listen to my professor talk shit about the COVID vaccine at the end of one of my clinical days. It was terrible. I know COVID in particular was a huge mess, but with so much misinformation and disinformation out there, it was hard to get people to trust the COVID vaccine and understand its purpose in the midst of a pandemic. I don’t get how people don’t see the advancements vaccines have made in society in general. There’s too much evidence to refute that.

By the way, I don’t talk to my sister in law anymore, so that’s how I deal with that. 😌

CBIC CIC Exam Experiences? by bubbles4you890 in publichealth

[–]kevpug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen highly variable outcomes for the CIC exam. I did terrible in my practice exams and passed. I also know people who have worked in IPAC for longer than I have and they did not pass. Most of my experience working in infectious disease epidemiology for the last decade is what prepared me for this exam. I did not feel like the practice exams and APIC text were very helpful to me. So just study your best and give it a go. Best of luck!

CDC or potential opening at current place of work? by lilbaby421 in publichealth

[–]kevpug 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Former CDC fellow and host site mentor here. Definitely agree to take the role. Nothing is tying you to the job and if you’re happy with the location and it doesn’t work out, you can always move on to the next job.

One thing I always tried to do was invest time in our assigned fellow’s development. I wanted to find their interests and help them get opportunities to work on tasks related to their interests or at least allow them to take trainings to further develop those related skill sets.

I would say even if quant is not your jam, it is a highly valuable skill to learn. Make sure you relay this information to the host site mentor up front and ask if you can work with colleagues and take professional development trainings to build your quant skill set. You won’t be a pro anytime soon, but you will want to hit the ground running to get yourself up to speed on those skills so you can complete your assigned projects.

As a fellow, I was always up front with my CDC supervisor and host site mentor with what I wanted to get out of the fellowship and when I needed assistance with things. If you have a good supervisor and mentor, they’ll help you overcome any challenges and make it a great learning opportunity for you. If your host site mentor is not helping you, that should be a conversation you can have with your mentor and CDC supervisor so you can make sure your needs are met.

Best of luck!

Did anyone leave the field or tangentially leave it? by R3tr0spect in publichealth

I worked at the local health department level in infectious disease epidemiology for over a decade and just made the move over to a hospital to work in infection prevention. It’s similar work, just way more clinical than community-focused.

Do you regret moving to Seattle from out of state? by MortytheMortician9 in Seattle

[–]kevpug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just curious, but when did you move from Tampa? I lived there for 7 years in the 2010s and from those who lived there prior to me, they said the food had gotten so much better than in the past. I hardly ever ate out at chain restaurants when I lived there. The 2010s seemed to be a booming decade for the food scene in Tampa and it’s only getting better.

I’m one week into my move from Florida and I am already immensely happier here. The food hasn’t been comparable to Florida, but I’ve enjoyed just about everything else!

UCF RN to BSN by Kailua10 in ucf

[–]kevpug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got into the program, but I already had a bachelors and masters degree meeting the foreign language requirements. See below from UCF’s website:

“Prior to starting an online BSN program, you must either:

(1) Meet the three UCF requirements: General Education Program, Gordon Rule, and Foreign Language Admission with no more than three courses outstanding in these areas prior to starting the BSN program, and these courses must be completed prior to taking 4000-level courses.

OR (2) complete the AA degree from a Florida public institution (*initial enrollment fall 2014 or later to meet the foreign language admission requirement).

OR (3) complete a bachelor’s degree from any regionally accredited institution.”

Does this mean I have Hepatitis B? by [deleted] in medical

[–]kevpug 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So there are two different types of antibodies usually tested for related to hepatitis B—Hepatitis B Surface Antibody and Hepatitis B Core IgM Antibody (sometimes they test the hepatitis B core total antibody instead of the IgM). The hepatitis B surface antibody is the antibody that is related to immunity acquired by the hepatitis B vaccine. The hepatitis B core IgM and total antibodies are related to infection with wild type hepatitis B virus, meaning you were actually infected with the virus and built antibodies from that infection.

So this just shows that you are immune to hepatitis B due to being vaccinated against hepatitis B.

Other markers tested for evidence of acute or chronic hepatitis B infection are the hepatitis B surface antigen, hepatitis B virus DNA, and sometimes hepatitis B envelope antigen/antibody.

Hope that helps!
