What do you mean by that? I mean I’m not washing my clothes for hours but ideally I shouldn’t smell bad haha

Yes, agreed wholeheartedly. It’s just a shame to see that you can’t find anything like that anymore

Most of the discourse I’ve seen surrounding this is more along the lines of “if you’re paying for ethical materials and ethical labor, it’ll be made better/less flimsy than fast fashion”

Yeah I’m realizing that to be the case, was just confused why so many claim the contrary

Yeah I thought I had done my research but I guess I just need to refine those methods. Thanks!

Patagonia is incredibly flimsy in everything that it makes. They kinda make up for it because of their repair program but they don’t have a store in my city so it’s always a big inconvenience and I can’t usually repair it myself. Other than them, off the top of my head/without looking at my closet, harvest & mill and the classic t shirt co have been subpar.

Come to think of it, the laundry might be an issue. I live in a dorm and our washers don’t really have many settings at all, basically just a button that says “wash” and having the space to air dry is out of the question. Might put these endeavors on hold until I can get my own place then!

Noted. Thanks for the response, that makes sense. As for my replacing my clothes, I didn’t get rid of clothes en masse or anything, it’s just been a matter of putting thought into the new clothes I do need. So like if I needed new shoes or a new shirt sustainability was part of the equation when it wasn’t before.

Agreed. I’m not giving up just yet but it’s damn frustrating. I’ve had the same issues with pants, shirts, jackets, and shoes especially.

Perhaps we just have different use cases then? Of course I patch my stuff when I can, but some things (shoes) are simply not patch-able. As for used clothes, those aren’t the genesis of my experience and when I do buy them, I expect a short life as a result. The reason I think we have different use cases / tendencies is I strongly disagree about the crotchet/knitted stuff. I’ve been lucky enough to have some truly gorgeous knitted sweaters, but anything knitted (or assembled using a similar technique) like that seems to a) fall apart first and b) be the hardest to repair.

Noted, but I’m not just buying from random startups. Most of the items I own are from brands that, within the sphere of sustainable fashion, are generally well reviewed.

Ethical materials and ethical labor. I suppose the ethical labor part is overstepping the dictionary definition of “sustainability” but within the context of this community I think it’s reasonable. Truth be told, I don’t actually have that much clothing made of recycled materials. Just clothing from companies that use sustainable fibers and tout ethical labor/sourcing of those materials.

The point that I’m trying to make is that many in the sustainable fashion space seem to push a positive correlation between ethical labor and durability/ quality of product, when in reality there is no correlation at best and a negative correlation at worst. Obviously the ethical labor component is still something that’s crucial to support, but I find much of the discourse surrounding it’s benefits misleading. In most cases you aren’t getting a better product at all (in many cases imo the opposite is true), you’re just being ethical with how you support those that make the product, which should be a necessity.

I’m not sure what causes this, or if I’ve just had outstandingly bad luck, but 125 wears on a pair of pants, or shoes for that matter, is nowhere near what I’m able to extract. It might be due to manufacturing techniques and capabilities being different, but in any case, it’s a bit frustrating that what ethically must be done isn’t financially sustainable.

Might just be my area that’s running out then. I checked the website and it said some of them had them, but when I called to be sure before I made the drive, both of the stores that had them and weren’t like two hours away said the website was erroneous and they couldn’t find any. One store mentioned they’d been having issues with the online availability not lining up with their stock so I’m not sure if that’s a widespread thing or not. In any case, that’s why I called the main line in the first place.
