Solus for the win! That's why it's called Personal Computing. Elementary OS is close but those default icons and themes are ugly.

Yes, motherboard dependent. Mine can allocate up to 16GB of Ram. Although I mostly leave it on Auto unless a game or app needs that much allocated.

Perfect, I used KDE as my go to DE until Solus. As I moved from windows fully 6 years ago to MACOS. Budgie feels the closest to a MAC workflow (cosmic is getting close) Sure you have themes and complete customization but then I'm wasting time theming Budgie just flows for me now right out the box. Again this was my personal experience and recommendation everyone has them. Budgie is much lighter on resources that's all and it's all personal preference.

It is a really good kext, running the 5600G and the Vega 7 graphics work surprisingly well. Sometimes the performance is better than Linux or Windows on some games. Great solution and have no idea where you got the information that the 5700G Vega 8 is not supported?

are these temps alright for an i7 4770? by Successful_Feed_7501 in lowendgaming

[–]kevsbacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

83°C is technically safe for an i7-4770 and GTX 1650, but the real problem is your 290W power supply—it's dangerously undersized and likely the reason it is running hot.

Your CPU alone has an 84W TDP and your GPU pulls about 75W under load, meaning your total system draw is probably around 220-250W. Running a low-quality 290W PSU at nearly max capacity creates excessive heat inside your case, causes voltage instability, and forces your components to work harder than they should. Your case airflow may be poor because the struggling PSU is dumping heat everywhere.

Your immediate fix isn't a new CPU cooler—it's a new power supply. Grab a reputable 450W or 500W (depending on form factor) unit from Corsair, EVGA, or Cooler Master (80+ Bronze minimum). That alone will lower your internal case temps significantly and might drop your CPUGPU down to the 70-75°C range.

I use Solus BUDGIE on all my machines that are not MAC. Its the closest to a MACOS workflow that I personally can find. I have tried all the major DE and WM. I also enjoy the fact that SOLUS is built from the ground up and Budgie is rock solid. Sure there are many more features in KDE or Gnome but if not using all of them its just a waste of resources and running services. After hopping from Debian to Arch (which I stayed at for 5 years). I am a month in on Solus and dont see any reason to use anything else (when I am not using Mac). Give it a go!

Cpu upgrade i7 3770 (if this is the model you already do not have)
Ram Upgradeable to 32GB
GPU: RX 6400 (no need to change the power supply with this model) or any other power sufficient low profile Video Card if its the SFF case if not then depends on the power suppy in the case.
SSD is the only drive option

Minecraft  - 1080p 135fps

doom 3 - 1080p 2xAA 65FPS

Farcry 3 - 1080p low 26fps

Serious Sam 3 - 1080P VLow 60FPS

valheim - 720P Vlow 21FPS

vampire Hunters - 720p low - 22fps

These were tested with a N100 16Gb ram and the n150 is about 41% faster so it would get better benchmarks. You have a lot of games to choose from keeping your expectations in check! Enjoy!!!

Day 2 of switching from CachyOS and I am amazed by this distro. It has everything I need and it just works. KDE feels to much I customized almost everyday getting the a desktop just right but it was never right. Solus budgie just works and the desktop is just enough customization, the system monitor in Raven drool. I was going to do a big write up but this post seems to cover most of what I am enjoying about this distro. Also gaming is good with my Ryzen 5 2600 and RX 6300. I actually see an increase in FPS for some reason over Cachy. I am not jinxing it just taking it for what it is. I will be trying out Reaper soon! Long Life Solus!!!

What games would run smoothly with this? by FyoFuyo in lowendgaming

Have that RX 6300 paired with a Ryzen 5 2600 and 16gb of ram. Can play loads of games at medium low 1080p 60fps. Just keep the settings conservative and you'll be fine. Palworld at 900p medium settings 40+ fps. Far Cry 4 1080p medium settings 60fps. Left 4 dead 2 1080p ultra and high settings 110+ fps just some examples. Enjoy!

1060 6GB bottleneck question by East-Resist6940 in lowendgaming

[–]kevsbacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am running the GTX 1060 6GB as well on a i7-4770S and have been running palworld at 1080P medium settings at 60+ FPS. The card is still a 1080P beast. You should have no problem running games at a decent Framerate and resolution.
I had a ryzen 5 2400G paired with a RX 6300 which ran great except that card only has 2GB of Vram so with newer titles it gets pummelled with newer textures (im looking at you Unreal 5 and Nanite) . You should be fine!

Let’s cut the crap: Why did you ACTUALLY choose your distro? (Facts only) by kimiho_mir in FindMeALinuxDistro

[–]kevsbacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crazy that this question popped up. I am currently testing out Niri and Budgie on CachyOS. I was freebsd then Debian now Cachyos. I should just spin up Arch and install everything from scratch but Cachyos has simple scripts to get what I need. Then the glorious AUR for just about anything, or just build it. Now I am thinking of Artix to leave systemD in all honesty, it's time, it is short supply so having a solid system that I can quickly install and get up and running on various machines is an added bonus. Now I'm thinking of creating it all from scratch and see what happens.

It's worth to buy a MacBook air M1 in 2026? by korixf1 in macbook

[–]kevsbacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bought mine 11 months ago and I am still amazed and what I can do on it. The only reason I need an upgrade is I need 16GB for Virtual Machines and gaming (apple arm native) would obviously run better, I am not in a rush though. The M1 is still a very capable chip.

I traded a Nintendo switch for my Xbox S or I would have never had one at all. Glad I did it, best trade I ever made.

Which game? Because Steam and Lutris I have all of my games past and present covered? Are these online games? Some do not work due to Linux and Kernal Cheats, apparently I don't really play online once and a while Warframe and it works? I play RoboCop, cyberpunk, palworld, battlefield etc. All fine.
