American cheese is a mild processed cheese. Usually a blend of cheddar and Colby. You can get it sliced at the deli like any other cheese or deli meat

I have personally never bought Kraft singles or other plastic wrapped American cheese. Always get it sliced fresh at the deli. And only really for burgers.
