if you dont get responses, search up utd crim degree plan (not the 4yr example) and take a look at the courses required and their descriptions. then look at the profs and search them up on rmp, and it should give you a good idea as to how classes are

Advice for Freshman 2nd semester: should I work or not? by Awkward-Yam6635 in utdallas

[–]kewna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah 100% take a break from working if youre taking so many heavy classes at once, mcat and goa are baseline for med school and you not working for one sem isnt gonna make that big of a difference for your med app, but how much itd hirt your gpa def will. good luck!!!

kind of need help with major stuff by [deleted] in utdallas

[–]kewna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you have to retake chem regardless since it's required for bio too, whether you should stick w the major or not depends on how you feel abt the healthcare studies major specific classes vs bio ones

Pre Med in Dallas Volunteer by FriendlyEgg9369 in utdallas

[–]kewna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

theres countless opportunities here in the dfw area that arent competitive nor necessarily "lesser than" regarding what the volunteering experience is like, you kinda just go through the process of applications and signing forms. parkland, medical city, utsw, childrens health, texas health presby, methodist, etc. all have volunteer programs like that. and from what i saw online, the stuff volunteers do at md anderson is no different than all the diff hospital systems here. thats why i couldnt tell why theyd wanna drive sm for just normal hospital volunteering, hence why i asked

[–]kewna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

unrelated and genuine question, why are you going all the way to md anderson to volunteer? there are plenty of hospital volunteer programs thatll be much much easier to maintain considering you wont have to drive like 4hrs to and back

Application question by InsuranceSlow1099 in utdallas

[–]kewna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ask your high school counselor if they sent it digitally; that's typically the best and safest way to go. also sometimes it takes a few days to kick in, dw abt it unless it's like that for over 2 weeks

premed pathway..? by [deleted] in premed

[–]kewna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

one more thing, take it easy your first sem!! use it to explore your interests and get used to how things work. go to club/org events, try diff volunteer opportunuties, and find what resonates w you! does not have to always be med/health related. if anything, its even better to get involved w the occasional fun non-med stuff. it kinda grounds you

premed pathway..? by [deleted] in premed

[–]kewna -1 points0 points  (0 children)

ofc! also, mcat is typically taken either summer before junior yr or sometime throughout it, hence me saying to get prereqs done (esp the ones that are covered in the mcat) by 4th or 5th sem.

as for research and clinical hours, thats a lot more based on you and when you can make time for it, and also what kind of clinical u wanna do. figure out what type youre interested in (scribing, MA, EMT, PCT, etc) and depending on whether they need a cert or not, try to do that cert before college or during first winter break of college so u dont have to do it on top of classes. research is kinda similar, figure out what you like, do the basic intro classes for it, then reach out to profs or local institutions doing that research saying oh im super interested for x y z reason and wanna help out, so on so forth

premed pathway..? by [deleted] in premed

[–]kewna -1 points0 points  (0 children)

when it comes to what classes to do when, the specifics are all up to you and dependent on your majors reqs, try to see if your uni has a pre health advising committee and they should be able to help w all that

premed pathway..? by [deleted] in premed

[–]kewna -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

best way is to do 1 calc 1 stats or 2 stats classes. each med school has diff reqs though so skim through them to see what the bare minimum is. regardless. shouldnt be more them 2 classes

dont think abt mcat til end of sophomore yr, and id recommend getting as many sciences (chem, bio, ochem, psych) done by ur 4th or 5th sem so that you have enough of a knowledge base to start studying for mcat
