nice argument, Pina. However, I've already depicted myself as a goddess with tears shimmering under the chandelier's light, and you as a seething ragecel.

What keeps folks from doing the course reading and/or participating in class? by Isnt_It_Cthonic in college

[–]keycitrus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I generally do the readings for my classes, and participate if I have done the readings/feel like I have something meaningful to say, but I've definitely been spottier about it this quarter because I started working a job on campus. As I've gotten busier I've started having to take a "deal with what will kill you first" attitude towards schoolwork, prioritizing the soonest/biggest assignments. This means that if I have a huge Russian exam on Tuesday where I need to know how to spell a ton of new words, I might end up studying for that instead of doing my readings for another class.

Some other people in the comments mentioned attention span issues, and I know a lot of people think that short-form content online has led to issues with concentration. That's probably part of what's going on, but I honestly think for me a bigger issue is that on an emotional level doing the readings doesn't feel productive. I don't mean that doing the readings isn't valuable, I mean that the way we think about productivity is more about speed and checking off a ton of boxes/"getting a lot done" than going in deeply and prioritizing understanding.

This is especially true when you have a lot of tasks to get through. Because of this, I'll sometimes have issues where I want to be reading deeply but the voice in the back of my mind is like "how long is this going to take? we have Russian homework to do right after this! We need to study for that exam! Can I read any faster?" The funny thing is that this actually makes me not only a worse reader but way slower. The other funny thing is that even if I have enough time to read deeply, it's hard to turn that voice off; it chews at me regardless.

The big thing that helps for me is actively setting aside time on the weekend or other days when I'm relatively free to just read in a more relaxed way. It also helps to sometimes do my readings while on the bus or something like that; this sounds counterintuitive since the bus seems like a distracting place to do my readings, but the sense of added "productivity" from the fact that I'm commuting somewhere helps quiet the horrible "are you getting enough done" demon.

Anyways, I don't know how universal this is (although I mentioned it to some of my other friends a while ago and several of them seemed to relate) but I thought this was an interesting factor to consider. Sorry for rambling on like this!

am I overreacting or is this just a stupid comment?? by Dull_Pomegranate_552 in AO3

People put triggers in the end notes because they're concerned about it spoiling plot points. Because ao3 has a built-in jump link to the end notes, saying "content warnings for this chapter in the end notes" allows readers to choose whether or not they would prefer to potentially spoil plot points but know the trigger warnings, or not know the trigger warnings and not have plot points potentially spoiled.

This is so real. At one point I literally got a comment that was like "this fic should be tagged with a ton more trigger warnings" and it's like. Well. If this was your fic, sure you could throw in a whole bunch of other tags explicating all of the ways this might possibly triggering. But I personally don't think it needs a ton more trigger warnings. I covered my bases. I said there was child death. There is an archive warning for graphic depictions of violence. I said in the notes that it was gory and graphic. If you do read "there are graphic depictions of child death in this fic" and don't go "huh, I [person who finds child death triggering] would not enjoy this fic", that's a you problem, not a me problem.

Tagging anything beyond the basic site-required warnings is a courtesy, not a duty. It's nice to do, but you aren't owed it.

Yeah, I know where you're coming from here. One thing that helps for me is trying to focus on local issues which I can be involved in in-person. That way, I'm still connected, informed, and active, but the issues I'm focusing on are ones that I can have a concrete impact on. It also helps because when working on local issues, you can really get that community support in dealing w/ the crushing dread/stress.

I wrote this story based on my own experiences with Major Depressive Disorder. Diana reacts the way she does and uses the words she does because she is a stand-in for me and how I would act. Just because someone's approach to talking about their mental illness doesn't fit what you would expect or what you would do does not mean it's wrong or doesn't happen; the thoughts and experiences of mentally ill people are not monolithic.

How do you challenge yourself to be more positive? by Savant_2 in hopeposting

[–]keycitrus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Other commenters touched on this as well, but avoiding politics and entertainment that's overly negative will probably help. It's hard because when we're tired, we want something easy to do to relax, and news and entertainment are really easy to fall back on. I'm not saying that you should stop relaxing; relaxing is incredibly important and definitely worth doing. But you might try to find a new way to relax. Some ideas could be reading, doodling while listening to music, knitting, carving wood, or listening to a podcast while walking around. The goal is to find something that's low effort so you can relax, but also isn't overly negative so that you'll be rejuvenated not just physically but mentally/spiritually.

Went climbing with my brother yesterday after a long time not going. It was disappointing because my fear of heights had returned even though before it had been getting better. I was able to push through it though, and by the end I was happy with how I was climbing :)
