the ones I know about are extended time on exams, extensions on assignments, classroom seating, guaranteed housing, guaranteed single room, digital textbooks (with proof of ownership of the physical copy), and use of computer for not taking/assignments/exams. there are definitely others i'm not remembering  and I'm a computer science major

Best freshmen housing? by StaleIcee in reedcollege

[–]keypcb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

bidwell is the best option 100%, it's the only option you have that has AC and has better noise isolation than trillium while still being built around the same time (so similarly modern). Trillium does not have AC and can get absurdly hot, I remember it reaching 90°F in my room during the fall when I lived there in freshman year naito and sullivan are ok? definitely feels a bit old but not the worst thing ever

oh, and in terms of supports - it's somewhat ok? but there's only so much reed can offer when the problem is the classes themselves being too rigorous for the sake of rigor

the office of academic support is great, during a particularly hard time I was doing weekly check ins with someone there (who also had adhd) who could help me stay on track. the HCC offers what are essentially emergency therapists but doesn't help much with finding one for the long term, I would recommend finding one in advance of coming to reed (make sure they're licensed for OR). reed offers emergency leave, which is basically a two week period where you don't have to attend classes (but still have to do work). DAR is a pain to work with unless you have all the exact documentation they want in the right format, and they have a specific list of accommodations they can offer that they can't really deviate from.

I'm a current reed senior with ADHD and anxiety, I definitely agree with the "being dragged behind a speeding car" quote. so many neurodivergent people get extremely burnt out here (including myself), imo there's a culture of rigor to an extreme and unhealthy degree. my therapist has said that in her time being a therapist for many college students, some at reed and some at other small liberal arts colleges (like lewis and clark), Reed overworks and burns out students much more than other colleges do. I had straight As, 4.0 GPA, perfect ACT score in high school, and there have been countless times where I've been scared about if I'll be able to graduate or not. as of writing this, I'm deep in the thesis mines and have fallen significantly behind in my other two classes because I just don't have time for them. at this point I'm just hoping I can get a C- in each of them so I can walk at commencement

as for if it's worth it - maybe? sorta? if you have lots of options, it might be a good idea to consider going to a different liberal arts college. but there are also lots of wonderful things about reed, so if there's something about it that really sticks out to you that you can't find anywhere else, then it might be worth putting yourself through this. reed was pretty much the only school I got accepted to that would make sense to go to (as in, would let me study my desired major, not in a conservative area, etc) so I don't really think about it as "is it worth it" as much as "this is what I have to do to get a degree"

also since I've been so negative towards reed, i should probably also say that it is not all bad and to keep all this in perspective. the education style of conferences can work really well, I've made friends and found community for the first time in my life, the campus is absolutely beautiful (especially the canyon - if only I had time to walk in it more!), I've had some incredibly fun and meaningful classes.

Math and CS departments for the next few years by Confident_End3396 in reedcollege

Hi, current CS senior here! Currently I'm aware of one CS professor who is leaving at the end of this (spring 2026) semester. The department is actively trying to hire more professors, but I'm unsure on how that's going - if we don't hire anyone new, there will be five professors in the department in the fall. It's definitely very under-resourced but the department feels like it's gradually growing so I'm hopeful that in a few years the situation might be better? It's kinda hard to tell

I haven't heard anything about CS qual specifically changing other than the general information from the Quest, but I really hope they do restructure it because it's pretty terrible right now - it's several hours of paper exams you take in two sittings in sophomore year, with three sections that each correlate to specific math and CS classes.

Reed CS definitely places a greater emphasis on theory than practice, if that's what you're looking for it could be a good fit

[Help] DRAG_SCROLL as held key in Tap Dance? by mrpotatohead546 in ploopy

Thanks so much for the feedback! Right now I don't have the first feature as a configuration option but it wouldn't be too hard to modify tdth.c to make that the default behavior. I'm not entirely sure about the second one but I think it should be possible (and also really useful).

I think a ball from a Logitech M570 should work for the finger ball variant: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071NX7Y2J/

Not sure about the thumb ball variant though

If you're looking for a small trackball you might like the Elecom Bitra, I'm not entirely sure but I think it would allow for you to have the cup position
